is this possible??? I realize this will be a custom frame.

Is it possible to design a frame that will accept 35mm to 45mm tires AND use side pull brake calipers?

I'm just looking for a bike for gravel/unimproved roads that will be just as usable on paved roads. I do not want a disc brakes! and would prefer to avoid canti's.

Maybe this simply falls into the category of endurance/touring design but I am not well versed on allowable tire size with side pull calipers.

it's possible, but then you're looking at really long reach sidepulls that tend to be flexy. are you thinking fenders too? mini-v's are really good alternative to cantis and discs, but can make fender mounting a problem.

I think you could do that with long reach brakes but I have no first hand experience.

Another option would be Paul Racers. I have the Racer Ms on one bike and I think they work great....if I was ordering another bike I'd almost certainly have it made with the Pauls in mind.

35s isn't a problem with "standard" reach brakes. I'm running 35s in my velo Orange brakes and they work as well as many short reach brakes. You can probably squeeze some 37-38mm tires in them.

I've also got 28s and eurus wheels for road rides

Take a look on the Rivendell site and/or phone them because they LIKE fat tires and know how to best accommodate them, not that other folks don't as well.

Sure, it you like tektros

These ones, never used them, I have used the shorter reach version, mega quick release opens up pretty big.

Paul racers as well

Even if mid-reach sidepull brakes they allow for the clearance, once you get past 33-35mm or so they get tricky. I have mine set up like thirdgenbird does--with Campagnolo shifters. That gives you two releases--one at the lever and one on the brake itself. Even with that much clearance, a 33mm tire (Jack Brown) is tough to get in and out when inserting and removing the wheel.

Racer M with 35mm (actual width).

Thank you for the photos....that answers some questions. I'm glad to see this is a possibility. I'm using Hutch 28mm tubeless on a standard road frame and that still has a good amount of clearance left. I wasn't sure how quickly the clearance disappears as the tire volume increases into the 35mm range.

Quickly. I fit a 30 under a record brake but it was tight. A 28 worked great.

Here is the same bike as above with a 28

V brakes and bob's yer uncle.

I recently built up a bike for this tire size range with Paul Minimotos. I must say I have never used a better brake. Wonderful modulation and power. Nothing else even close.

I just with they made a slightly larger version that would fit the 55mm RatTrap Pass tires with fenders the current project is built around but that is a topic for another post...

I use TRP cx8.4 with campy levers on my Elephant NFE. It'll take a BG RnR 43mm no problem and I run 35's under fenders.

I just got a new ti frame put together using tektro r559 extra long reach brakes. It takes 35s with fenders. Haven't tried the BG's but they might fit. I like the r559's. They feel nice and stop well.
