View Full Version : Trying to get over it by venting

I just had to vent to my favorite most awesome cycling forum. First let me say that in general I think all of us who are cyclists are very competitive around others who are cyclists whether they be friends, acquaintences or otherwise. I have no problem with this. It's just the way it is but sadly I do have an issue with an indivual who is my work friend that is 20 years younger than me that just makes it a point to take away one's KOM on Strava for the sake of taking it away. Almost like an egoist. Locally there is a segment not far from my house where a rival guy my age held the KOM for some time. I went out and took it. I told my 20 years younger work friend who holds almost every KOM in town that I want to take it back this week because yesterday some stranger took it. So what does he do but go out and take it last night making it impossible for me to KOM again and says "I loosened it up for you". I don't have a problem with losing a KOM but I did tell him my plans ahead of time. Maybe I'm just a whiner and need to fess up to the fact that I'm getting older and can't lay down 1100 watt sprints like he can :( So if I'm a whiner one of you guys come over and slap me in the face and say "Get over it". :crap:

get over it, or filter your results by age if you really need that KOM to make yourself feel good.

My friend... honestly? your friend is an a$$ :)

Don't worry about that KOM thing... there's things more important in life.

The other option you have is to put the computer in a motorcycle or find a friend with a motorcycle, go super late to the climb in question and have the moto to tow you up at 40mph :D Problem solved :P

I say if you want to be competitive, pin on a number and race against people in your category. So yes, get over Strava. That being said, if you really want to be "that guy" and get him back, make your own Strava segment. Then you can delete him every time (I think) if he takes it.

If you told your friend about a Craigslist deal you were pursuing and he went and sniped it, that would be a d--- move, but Strava... who cares? It's just a game. The rules of the game give the KOM to the fastest person. I would try to accept that he's the fastest guy in town and just have fun riding your bike.

If you're 20 years older than anyone else on Strava and you're getting KOMs at all just chalk it up to riding in an area where there aren't that many cyclists.

My area forget it.. the KOMs are all held by Pros and Cat 1/2 folks who ride like 10k miles per year.

Pretty easy to not get stressed out about not having KOMs.

One of my favorite hills about 1.5 miles from my house has been Strava'd 12,000 times...

Three options.

1) get over it.
2) worry about your age/weight category to make you feel better.
3) get stronger and beat the KOM.

Ok, you are into STRAVA and are upset that others are out Strava'ing you? STRAVA is all about ego and dick measuring. How can you get upset at someone riding on public roads with the intent of going the fastest over a section of road to measure themselves against others doing the same? No one is taking your precious KOM's, they are not yours, they are open to anyone who is privileged enough to meet the stringent requirements for joining STRAVA. Sorry to sound so harsh, but you need, as you suggested, a heathy dose of reality here. There is always someone faster, someone younger, and someone with a longer top tube; it is life. The only thing worth measuring is your happiness, and that is not measured against others.

Yeah, yeah, I know this is a joke but I hadda chime in because I took this as brilliant mocking on Strava-Stud. Touche jmal, well done. I think guys like Strava-Stud think themselves as pretty hot stuff - take my wife and my job, oh no, what ever will I do?!?

HaHa! It would take a hella lot more than being a schmuck on Strava to do that! Go ahead Strava-Stud, try it! The mere fact that you're a big swingin' dick on Strava tells me that I got nuthin' to worry about. The phrase "Get a life" isn't used much anymore is it? No matter, it fits here.

Tell the guy that you have several alternative names on Strava and have a few other KOMs you are proud of and hope not to lose. Then pick some tough ones and see if he goes to flail against them hopelessly.

KOMs are not signs of greatness, they are artifacts of a local rider pool. Every KOM one of us has reflects significant limits in that pool. Those limits reflect luck, not talent.

His taking that KOM got you 90% to a more Zen way of thinking. Paceline will take you the rest of the way. You can thank us both, with peace in your heart.

1. Invite hime to paceline and send him right to this thread - make sure to tell him "I loosened it up for you."

2. Find his girl, seduce her with your elder, cycling, renaissance man attitude - make sure to tell him "I loosened it up for you" (if you're married, find some Swedish dude to do it, Swedish men give all American men a complex)

3. Do a ride with him and let him drop you all over the place, but place your garmin in his jersey pocket. Upload the ride, let's say his name is 'jim' - title the ride "loosening up Jim" - email it to everyone at work and make sure to say that you two bonded over this and it was a chance for you to pass on your knowledge and slowly ride with Jim. One day, with hard work, Jim has a chance of beating you.

That's all I got for now, but do those 3 and let the braintrust know how it went.

Some people worry about putting food on the table for their family.
Some people worry about paying their mortgage.
Some people worry about how to put their kids through college.

And some people worry about their Strava KOM status.

Now he makes super groovy cycling kit

And chases Strava KOMs for pleasure, personal satisfaction and free marketing
No longer races (although he's been cleared to race for over a year).

Say what you will, but the kats with 10, 20, 30 pages of KOMs tend to be real athletes. And they're as competitive as a mountain lion looking for a meal.

Oh, in some cases, guys who pin numbers for a living like to play as well
https://pvcycling.wordpress.com/?s=gaimon
It turns out that Gaimon, who’s one of the nicest people around, showed up to help the Helen’s guys retake their Mandeville KOM, formerly owned by local legend Tony Manzella and recently usurped by Nick Brandt-Sorenson, the infamous masters racer who received a two-year suspension after testing positive for naughty substances at masters nationals in Bend, Oregon in 2011, where he won both road and the crit titles and then de-won them after the pee-pee test.

It's "competition." You got beat by a faster rider. Assuming winning Strava means anything at all, what could it mean if faster guys weren't allowed to compete so slower guys could always win the KOMs.

Get over it and go ride your bike. If you have as much or more fun than the next guy, you've won!

If you're 20 years older than anyone else on Strava and you're getting KOMs at all just chalk it up to riding in an area where there aren't that many cyclists.A couple of years ago I was with a friend when he got some KOM's on a fairly well-used road. I guess at that point nobody had bothered to log the miles yet. Nowadays, I think the KOM is no more than 2/3s the time we did it in. There are some monsters around here, and I'm pretty sure they aren't using any kind of PED, digital or otherwise. If I was going for anything, it would be DFL, but it's really hard to get those too.

One nice thing about pushing 60 is that you don't have to care about this sort of thing any more. A few years back, I was pretty sick for the entire spring and I found out that I enjoyed riding slow and not hurting myself. If I trained a little, I might be able to get a KOM on a segment that was slightly downhill for many miles, otherwise forget it.

Usually, I'm pretty receptive to rants, but not about strava. Just make your stuff private and stop looking at rankings. So much better for everyone
