View Full Version : OT: What else is in your garage?

All this car talk lately has me wondering what other "projects" you folks are working on.

Show your project car, motorcycle, kayak, sailboat, jet ski, antique lawnmower, furniture making hobby, etc etc.

daily driver commuter cars and bicycles need not apply in this thread.

in other words: aside from bikes where else does your disposable income go??

that would be called my daughter. The last 12 years of tuition with two to go before the final six

Why do you think I read the classifieds all the time?

In two more years it'll be kites and new windsurf boards. Less bikes unless mtb

This was my dad's project in the late 70's (63 Corvette). The front end was missing when he got it so he and his buddy's went crazy with some fiberglass... It got shelved when my oldest brother was born in 79. Has sat ever since. We just started the path to getting it back on the road this summer. Plan is to get it road worthy, then eventually put a stock nose back on it. Not sure what we wil do with the rear end / fenders. I would like to get as close to stock as possible but it will be a driver, never a show car so it doesn't really matter. My dad is the fellow in the green shirt in the first pic.

Latest project is going to be a rear main seal replacement on my 2010 GTI. Figure since this is a major service, might as well throw in some fun too and get the APR Stage 1 tune. They usually recommend new plugs and coil packs for that, so if we're tearing apart the bottom end of the motor, might as well give the top some love too...

Besides rehabbing my knee ( which is a project all unto itself ) I am about to start rehabbing my house to sell. Since I have lived here 13.5 years ( and 2 wives ) the place is pretty cluttered, needs some paint patch work and a good cleaning. All this before I list it and the photographer comes in to do a "House and Garden" photo shoot ( I also have 3000 sq ft of drought tolerant landscaping ).

That is my winter project....oh yeah, then finding a place for the current wife and I to live. We have a pretty good idea where we are moving to though, so that helps.

Thought I'd do all this in 2015, but the way the knee rehab is going ( slowly ) I may have to wait til 2016 to put it on the market.

Oooops, edit: this is about garage projects, sorry. But, the garage needs a good cleaning and rehab too...:)

If I answer the question of what else is the garage, the answer is just a bunch of tools, gardening, and exercise equipment. If I answer the question of what else consumes disposable income, that would be the contents of the wine cellar, which being in Texas, is most certainly not in the garage.

The main seal I'm leaving to the shop since the main seal apparently takes a specialized tool to ensure it mates properly with the tranny. Last thing you want is to get it all buttoned up to find you've still got the leak. And the tune is just an ODB flash they can do through the port once the motor's back in the car.

But there's some other minor bits too I'll be able to handle under the shade-tree. PCV needs work and the valve cover gasket has a bit of a leak too.

VW really couldn't have managed the crank case pressure on this 2.0 motor a bit better.

Been taking a break from it for the last couple years to focus on other things, but it's old Volvos for me. Specifically 240s.

Here's the last one I built the day it landed in my driveway:

Tools, shoes, cycling clothes, hats, various fluids in various containers, a makeshift kitchen pantry, a couple of brooms, a recycle bin, a trash barrel, Porsche and other racing posters, a 2012 Mazda 3, and a 1996 911 (993) targa which is likely to be for sale soon.

Let's see:
Large Hobart TIG welder, Hobart MIG welder, engine hoist, Ford 302 on the engine stand, several T5 transmissions under one of the benches, couple large piles of assorted Ford 2.3/fox body Mustang parts, several cabinets full of various car parts (majority being 2.3T and 302 parts).
The engine (good for core only. started making metal soon after we bought the car, POS SOB) from my wifes PT cruiser I just replaced. Rolling tool cabinet/bench. And of course all my tools/tool boxes.
Don't even ask about the shed. It's still fairly full, even after selling all the 2.3 cores and parts.

Thanks dudes! The black one was ridiculously fast but the beige one ended up being way more fun and cool. I never shoulda sold that one... I've tinkered on and rebuilt about a dozen other 240s but those 2 were the ones that I delved the deepest into.

Been missing old car tinkering lately -- 2005 S40 & 2006 XC90 maintenance haven't been scratching that itch for me. Just waiting for the right candidate to land in my lap so I can figure out something fun to do with it. Even though the V8 in a Volvo has been done to death I've been leaning towards an LS swap and turbo-ing it. Easy to do, crazy power and relatively cheap. We'll see.

A ton of Pinot Noir -- Rhys, Arcadian, Dehlinger, Kutch, Williams Selyem, some French burgundies, etc.

A half-ton of Zins -- mostly from Scherrer, but some others.

A smattering of California Cabs, Chardonnays, and some Bordeaux, Sauternes, etc.

Cameron - that Volvo is fantastic!

My garage is filled with bikes, fly fishing gear, lawnmower, skis, gardening tools, a beer fridge, weed whacker, snow tires and wheels, sailboat sails, windsurfers, BB guns, camping gear, softball stuff, soccer stuff, tennis rackets, snowshoes, and a sometimes-visiting mouse.

This are the times when you actually were able to fix a darn volvo w/o going to the f... dealer eh? My dad had a 122...

You can still do a lot of the work on newer Volvos yourself. Definitely need some additional tools, etc. but nothing too crazy. Some stuff you're definitely stuck, but that's most modern cars. 122 is a great Volvo - got any pics of your dads? Love to see it if so!

I see you put a turbo and stuff, is that the same engine?? What year is it?? :)

2 different motors. The black one was a 1980 station wagon. I had initially turbocharged the stock motor but it was still slow. So I built this:

http://www.ipdusa.com/uploads/images_blog_slideshow/fullsize_527.jpg

http://www.ipdusa.com/uploads/images_blog_slideshow/fullsize_674.jpg

http://www.ipdusa.com/uploads/images_blog_slideshow/fullsize_530.jpg

It's a hybrid motor built out of parts from a few different Volvo engines but the basics were bolting the twin cam head on the block that came on the single cam motors. Forged internals, custom manifolds, GT32 turbo, etc. and a BMW Getrag 265 transmission behind it. I'll tell you that a 30+ year old Volvo station wagon with 300+ horsepower is very fun.

The beige car I built shortly after that. It was a 1978 2 door. I built that motor too, but that one I kept non-turbo. Same twin cam conversion but approached differently since it was a non-turbo build. Instead of focusing on trying to make crazy power I built that one with the goal of being cool, very clean/sanitary and very fun. Sold it to a guy that moved with it to Texas and last I heard it still lives down there and is owned by a guy at a Volvo dealer there.

Cameron - that Volvo is fantastic!

I have always had a soft spot for early volvos, we had a P1800 and then 242. I have to say you have taken yours to a whole new level of cool. It really has a fantastic look, what are those wheels off of? They kind of look like really big versions of the 242 gt wheels from around 80. The engine compartment is beautiful and I am sure the engine runs strong. Great plan and execution. Looks like fun!

There's a 1960 MB 190SL that my Dad hosed up that's been a 'round to it' as well as a 2006 Husqvarna TE250 that needs an engine.

Dad's 1991 Old Wing needs a trans. That one's a real PITA cause you have to break the bike in two to get it out.

Otherwise, its bicycles, bicycles and more bicycles

No man... we sold it after like 3 years, he got it used so my older sister could learn to drive. 2 tons 1965 tank with 4 doors :)

Built engines and stuff. thats a skill that is good to have, together with a garage to do it. It must be impressive to leave v8s behind in an old car hehehe :)

The original Chrysler minivans came with a 2 point something engine and some form what I understood came with a turbo, knew a guy in NC that had one tricked out, a dormant beast... since im not a mechanic, if you change the engine and crap in a newer more computerized volvo, how do fix the setings of the computer?? some volvos you cant even put a better radio because the computer wont like the new one.

DO you change the chip? what do you do? just curioisty because after putting that turbo in the car the computer goes bananas with the readings, right?

Well...it's an embarrassing list really:

1964 Vespa GL150 (210)
1966 Vespa SS180 (200)
1967 Lambretta SX200 (TS1 225)
1967 Lambretta 150 Special (240 H2O, full race)
1972 Serveta Jet200 (Runner 172 hybrid, project)
1980 Vespa P200 (230 H2O, full race)
1997 Honda CR125
1999 Italjet Formula 125
2002 Honda VFR800

1962 Buick Skylark
1974 Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300 Export
1992 BMW 325is ITS car
2000 BMW MCoupe

I would sell every last one of them, besides the MCoupe and the TS1...just need to get off my lazy butt. Some of them are so deep in the project/modified that there really is no selling them.

Sigh, a different/younger me spent a lot of time and $$$ in the garage.

(There's also the Haas TL-1, Tree VMC, Bridgeport, MIG, TIG, plasma, drill press, horizontal bandsaw, etc. that support(ed) the building of all these things!)

Power tools and miscellaneous lumber and plywood, as I continue with my "epic" home renovation...

What I really need now is a garage door specialist who will sort out my double ended door setup, so the "temporary" set up of doors held in place with bent nails and waiting for track and openers could be made usable.

So far, I've had one guy who decided we were too far away, one guy who showed up and said he wouldn't do it because it would be "too hard" and a third who wanted $100 to show up and look at it, telling me that this wasn't a bad deal, since he would take the $100 off if I got him to do the work.

Cameron

No man... we sold it after like 3 years, he got it used so my older sister could learn to drive. 2 tons 1965 tank with 4 doors :)

Be fun if you still had it, but I'm sure the memories of it are fond ;)

Those turbo minivans are so cool. I'd love to have one to build one day just because they're so weird and un-assuming.

So there's different ways to attack the engine management and car electronics depending on what you're putting together. For the 2 cars I posted -- the black wagon with the turbo motor I ditched all factory management completely and wired in a stand-alone engine management system called LINK. It handled both the ignition system and the fuel injection system. A little daunting at first since you have to wire everything from scratch but not bad if you're good with attention to detail. Pretty cool when it's done as you just plug your laptop in to the car and have full access to everything. I'm good with the mechanical stuff and wiring stuff but the actual tuning of the car is not a skill set I have yet so I left that part to a friend/professional. I built it, wired it and got it running then he did all the actual tuning with (for) me. Ignition curves and fuel maps were gladly left to him.

For the beige car it was originally a mechanically fuel injected car (KJet CIS system) which I completely removed. I replumbed the fuel system and updated the engine management to Bosch LH Jetronic 2.2 which was used on later model 240s. Still a pretty basic fuel injection system but much more advanced and much more adept at dealing with the kind of motor I'd built for that car. Bonus is/was that I just needed the right donor car to pull everything off of (sensors/injectors/ECU/etc). Then retrofit it all onto the car and if you do it right you're really only splicing into about 4 existing wires in the car.

Now, newer Volvos running Bosch motronic (me4.3, 4.4, me7, me9, etc) stuff which is about mid-90s on up it can be a whole different game. Not nearly as easy for crazy swaps, etc. while retaining the original system. However, flashing the ECU isn't hard with the right tools/interface. The real trick is knowing someone/somewhere that actually knows how to properly write tunes for these cars to flash into the ECU. Modern management systems used on Volvos are very advanced and very good. There's a LOT of bad tuners out there that don't understand how it works and try to skirt around things by deflection tuning.

Probably way more info than you wanted, but yeah... :o

I might be interested in giving that Mini cooper a good home if you get to that point. I have an irrational soft spot for tiny British cars...

Well...it's an embarrassing list really:

1964 Vespa GL150 (210)
1966 Vespa SS180 (200)
1967 Lambretta SX200 (TS1 225)
1967 Lambretta 150 Special (240 H2O, full race)
1972 Serveta Jet200 (Runner 172 hybrid, project)
1980 Vespa P200 (230 H2O, full race)
1997 Honda CR125
1999 Italjet Formula 125
2002 Honda VFR800

1962 Buick Skylark
1974 Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300 Export
1992 BMW 325is ITS car
2000 BMW MCoupe

I would sell every last one of them, besides the MCoupe and the TS1...just need to get off my lazy butt. Some of them are so deep in the project/modified that there really is no selling them.

Sigh, a different/younger me spent a lot of time and $$$ in the garage.

(There's also the Haas TL-1, Tree VMC, Bridgeport, MIG, TIG, plasma, drill press, horizontal bandsaw, etc. that support(ed) the building of all these things!)

Maybe someday you'll see the beige 242 in your neck of the woods. I think the guy that owns it now is in Austin actually. I want to say it's Roger Beasley Volvo he works at.

And I agree, lots of cool stuff in these garages! All these Porsches just reminds me how bad I've always wanted a 964. Too bad the market for them has spiraled out of control on them over the last couple years. Can't even touch one for less than $20K seems like.

Louis - a GTV is on the list for next year. I've had a hankering for one for years! Truly a work of art. How do you like it?

Hi Eric,

A few years ago I was in the same position as you are today - I'd been admiring them for ages and finally decided to do something about it. I love it, and every time I look at it I can't help but admire the styling. IMO Giugiaro really created something great. (The only down-side to have waited all these years to get one is that they are no longer as affordable as they used to be.)

Good luck with your search.

OK, I'm glad to see another sailboat posted in this thread. Mine is a project that I am going to get to this winter, for sure! Well, we'll see.....

It is a Firefly racing dinghy, which I haven't used for a few years. Needs paint, varnish, repairs on the trunk. It is a 12 ft racing dinghy designed by Uffa Fox, it flies a 22 ft tall swiveling mast with a jib. Soft chines, and a mahogany hot glued hull. It is beautiful in the water. It is a great design, but not high end stuff. I also didn't get out in the Peinert 26 scull enough this summer. It wasn't good prep for riding in France last week.

Major fun, major rush, terrifying at times. I just putz around, but my son is one of the top kart racers in the country in his age group. We primarily run Rotax engines, which are 125cc water cooled 2 strokes. You can use the same basic motor from age 8 until adulthood, the only things that change are the pipe and the restriction on the header. It's really hard to drive a kart well. It's very physical and exhausting. It's humbling for me to watch 10yr old kids race bumper to bumper with lap times separated by thousandths of a second.

VERY cool! I've always liked the instrument panel on the Innocentis versus the standard, early Coopers. I saw this Mini a week or two ago a few blocks from my house. It was marked as a Cooper S. I don't have a garage yet...does a shed count?

In it lives my 2007 Honda Ruckus, when I put to sleep back in Dec. of 2012 it ran great and had 11,000miles on the clock. There is also a 2001 Mercury 5hp outboard which the waterpump failed on but I fixed it and that was a crazy experience, almost overheated near the mouth of the Merrimac River. Very dangerous waters:eek: then there is my cheapie but brandy new walmart push lawnmower, it is put to work doing things that mowers ten times the price usually do. However I did spring for a commercial grade Shindawa weed wacker that really is the best in class. The jewel of the shed has to be my 2006 gsxr1000 sporting a full titanium TiForce exhaust tuned to perfection with a powercommander and Marvic Magnesium wheels among other mods. This bike is very, very fast and I bought it relatively cheap this way. Gotta love when someone spends 17k on a bike and you get it for less than a third of the full retail value. After having said that I still lust for an H2 750 and a blackshadow.

I'd love to get rid of them, but they are stored at the vacation place in NM and I won't be going out there till ski season. They are not in perfect shape by any means, but they have been stored for most of their life, at least 25 years. If you are interested and you are not in a hurry we can work something out. Shipping would probably be sky high. IIRC, they were about 8" to 10" wide and a true "mag". They were also for Datsun only, not to be used on GM products which must have a similar bolt pattern.

buldogge, Schmed, thanks guys

Since we're on the topic, I was fortunate enough to drive this Innocenti recently. It's not mine, but after being done with it, I wished it was- didn't want to return the keys.

Interesting - I never heard of Innocenti. Had to look it up. I've been on the track with those original Minis, and they look to be a HOOT to drive fast. The pic shows how big the new Mini is.

How many miles on your E28 M5? I drove an E28 (with sport seats) 1,000 miles, got out, and wanted to get back in. Best seats I've ever owned.

Oh, and 150k on the M5. How about your sweet M3?

Major fun, major rush, terrifying at times. I just putz around, but my son is one of the top kart racers in the country in his age group. We primarily run Rotax engines, which are 125cc water cooled 2 strokes. You can use the same basic motor from age 8 until adulthood, the only things that change are the pipe and the restriction on the header. It's really hard to drive a kart well. It's very physical and exhausting. It's humbling for me to watch 10yr old kids race bumper to bumper with lap times separated by thousandths of a second.

Rotax make great engines, thats cool they can use the same basic package for a few years. I am sure driving them is very demanding, it must generate high g's in the corners and under braking which will wear a person out pretty quickly. Thanks for the info, looks like a blast!

Mark, this is available about 4 miles from my place. If you buy it, can I use some of the extra space? (or do you think you'll need all of the 18 car garage?)

Not as interesting as some of the toys posted, but I was looking for a relatively painless ownership experience in a topless sports car. Tried a couple of Miatas, but this one quite tickled my inner kid.

Always liked the looks of these, and it was surprising to see Honda stop production on them.

Yuck...If I had a 1/3 of that kind of money, I would buy something on Portland or Westmoreland Place.

Me too. Old ones well cared for still bring stooooopid money at auctions.

Found it on the Nashville, TN craigslist, late on a Sunday evening last summer. Was mine 4 days later. Owned by a nice couple in their middle-50's, and kept under a cover in the garage. Guy clenched hard, even buying a replacement battery from the dealer so that had the proper Honda label. A couple of minor stone chips on the front bumper, but pristine panels and wheels, and only 25,000 original miles.

It only goes out with the top down, which for me, is anytime it is about 40 degrees and not pouring. Turn the heat up, wear a light coat, and smile large while everyone looks on scratching their head.

Not really. Mine is an AP2 (2006). The pre-2004, AP1, cars were a bit more sensitive sudden throttle lifts while loaded up. Drive it like a 911, coming in a little slower, but engine at high simmer, and gradually add for a graceful exit. Kids coming at an S2000 after driving a boosted up FWD will find it doesn't understeer much.

Beautiful car, i got to drive a couple, loved the power band, it really came alive in the upper rpm range.
