I think it was just misplaced humour.

I did the same thing about 10 years ago but fortunately I hit the back of an older Caprice so I rolled up the rear window and on to the roof. I should have been able to see the car for a mile or more but I was in a wide bike lane and just wasn't looking. I have known 2 people killed doing the same thing, one when I was a schoolboy and a kid in my class was a cyclist and went into the back of a parked car, the other a teenager who hit a trailer of a landscaper who had pulled over to take a phone call. The second accident was on the same stretch where I hit the Caprice and I was passing in the opposite direction as the ambulance arrived.
