View Full Version : 26 + 2.75 = 27.5 + 2.2?

Hey y'all!

I am thinking of building a Surly 1x1. They say it's designed for 26" wheels with big 2.75" tires (mid-fat they call it).

Am I correct to think that I could build it with 27.5" wheels and 2.2" tires and that will not mess with the bike's geometry or handling?

I'm curious why Surly says :

Keep in mind using taller wheels raises your bottom bracket height, decreases stability, and adds greater potential for toe overlap. In short, it will change the ride characteristics of your frame. But we ain't your moms and we sure ain't gonna tell you not to do it. We encourage experimentation of all kinds, but do not specifically recommend this sort of behavior. Get it?

I remember Pacenti discussing that frame. As I recall, he said said it was like the bike was made for 650b.

A Surly Dirt Wizard 2.75 on a 559mm (26") 50mm-wide rim will have an effective diameter of circa 697mm. It'll be slightly shorter on a narrower rim.

A 2.2" tire on a 584mm (650B) rim has an effective diameter of circa 696mm.

I think you'll be ok.

I ran a 1x1 with 700x45 Panaracer fire cross tires on 29er rims. It was awesome.

Yes, the Surly 1x1 works perfectly with 27.5" x 2.3 tires.

The reason is that a 26 x 2.8" tire is the same diameter as a 27.5 x 2.3" tire.

I purchased a 1x1 to test its compatibility with 27.5" wheels. My conclusion was, that with the wheel slammed all the way forward, the clearances were ideal for 27.5 x 2.3" Neo-Moto tires. By "ideal" I mean the location of the bridges and clearances were exactly what I would have specified had I designed the bike myself. The rigid fork had similar clearances.

Cheers,
KP

I had a Troll, which is nearly identical to the 1x1, and ran 27.5x2.4 XKings on it with plenty of room. Do it!

I've used my 1x1 with 24x3 and 26x2 and there always appears to be a ton of clearance. I'll have to give 27.5 a try one of these days.

I'm a bit late to the party but I just mounted 26x3 Knards on my Troll to Velocity P35s. A bit tight in the rear but I just made a mini Krampus!
