So very much...

I'm about to head down to Richmond and I was just watching some vids that friends are posting and the stupid cowbells are almost making me rethink going.
Yes, you have a thing that makes noise. Good for you. What are you three years old?
People have been racing for a long time and somehow I believe that they would still try even if some dork wasn't shaking a bell and screaming his brains out.

The proper place for a bell in cycling?... At the start/finish line on the last lap.
Don't bother arguing with me. I'm correct. Cowbells suck.

Should we bring Vuvzelas?

At least people have to stop and take a breath with those and unlike a rattle, I mean cowbell, a 3 year-old can't do it.

We went to a soccer game with the kids last weekend (go Lobos) and those vuvuzelas were just awful. I am not a fan. I can empathize with you, though I don't generally think of cow bells as being as loud.

Clouds don't make noise just to hear themselves do it. And don't get me started on Harleys with straight pipes that no one likes except for the dudes on them that are so desperate for attention.

Cowbells are great.

A bike race is a party, might as well make some noise. It ain't church.

Be sure to take a cowbell to your next party and ring it in someone's ear for a couple of hours.
As for a cowbell in church, why not there too? Will it chase the God away?

.....Cowbells suck.

+1

My son spent for years on his High School Crew team and we were the only school that brought Fn Cow Bells to the regatta's. It was stupid and I was often embarrassed to be a part of that team.

And never once did I ring one.

Yup. Cowbells suck. They make going to some sporting events very unpleasant.

See... I'm not alone.

It's one of those things where your rights to be a doofus end where our rights to be able to not have our ear drums blasted out begin.
Seriously, what if some dude with a pressurized air horn was constantly blasting away six feet from wherever you walked at your kids soccer game, would that be cool because "It's a party"?

Just because one in every twenty people has a stupid cowbell that doesn't make it cool.

On this you are really mistaken. They do indeed save lives. many times cars do not see motorcycles, but they do hear them.

Beg to differ. Mississippi Queen without cowbell would be like Mississippi Queen without Leslie West.

Yes, and BOC's Don't Fear the Reaper and ELO's Evil Woman are ALL proper use of cowbell.

I'm a motorcyclist and I've heard that BS argument about loud pipes are there for their safety. If Harley guys really cared about safety the would wear Snell approved full-face helmets instead of those brain buckets (or no helmet at all) and jackets with sleeves.

I've got a Harley with a nice loud set of Rinehart pipes. It really does make a difference with motorists hearing you. I've had bikes with and without, and the pipes do make a difference.

Now if I could just get pipes that sound like cow bells...

people bring cowbells to crits and ring them at random times so I never know when an actual prime or final lap is

every time I hear a harley rip by and drown out my internal monologue I think to myself "damn, listen to all those lives being saved!!" I mean if you really need sound to save your life can't you go full Apocalypse Now and blast the flight of the valkyries? I think that would be more pleasant for the people whose lives are not at stake.

There were plenty of those near us today.

Oh, and I have yet to hear a single motorcycle coming toward me (while driving an auto) and I don't have a luxury car with enhanced noise protection, nor do I play my radio loud. I hate loud motorcycles.

The "air sausages" are worse... Maxxis was handing them out. Shimano was giving out cowbells.

Fun post.

Loud motorcycles reminds me of a video I watched (the point/funny part is at 5:45 if you want to cut to the chase):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3DiAecsh_0

A good friend of mine just got one of these I rode it and it's an amazing machine:

I did 6 Gap today and every time a sag car would pass us they would be doing the cowbell thing. Imagine every ounce of your body is in pain and all you want to do is fall over and some yokel drives by with a cowbell.

After the 10th time I really hoped they would drive over a cliff.

Libby Hill had plenty of Vuvzelas and cowbells. Maybe they need a brass band too?

I was on Libby Hill today too. I'll take the vuvzelas before cowbells.

(I'll also take one of those electric motorbikes in the link above).

My 3 (and a half year old) as riders approached. "I need my blue bell!"

Put me in the pro-bell crowd. It's a bunch of grown men (or women) in colorful underwear riding in big circles for our amusement. On the receiving end, even as a pack filler 55+ Masters, a cowbell rung by a friend or acquaintance gives me a little boost for a second or two. It's part of the atmosphere of bicycle racing.

There are no primes in cross races. Cowbells at crits before the finish line is the only concern I have.
