Is Tony Martin using steak as his chamois?

No, that's his bum.

There are so many alternatives to grip tape that would be equally tacky without the bleeding. I guess he was all in...

That might explain why he slowed down in the last section of the course...

Why did anyone think was a good idea...

Ok, so this is something he does regularly? or something he just tried for the world championships?

Seems like a bad place to experiment with equipment choices.

Also, I noticed the strange quilting of his chamois in the picture that went around... seems that was a custom piece of kit? Also a first time experiment?

It just seems like this sort of thing should not happen on race day. Maybe during practice... but even then you'd hope that the rider has the sense to stop and reevaluate the set up once the grit wears through to the skin.

Prologo has something called CPC that is supposed to add grip to a saddle. I don't know if or how well it works but if Martin went this far to not slip/slide on his saddle, you'd think Specialized could have designed a better solution. I see commitment on Martin's part (a bit extreme but hey, dude wants to win) and I see laziness on the part of the big S. Geez, build the dude a one-off solution...unless you're too busy suing folks.:D

I don't understand what problem he was trying to solve with the grip tape in the first place.

And no, I will not be adding grip tape as a saddle cover option, no matter how nicely you ask :D

It is not the fist time. He has been using sand paper for awhile.

Yikes. I don't get it on so many levels but I guess I applaud/respect his commitment to winning.

I have always been told, and I have followed this advice, never try anything on game day that wasn't already tried and tested in practice.

To cut through the outer layer, all the chamois, then into the arse...that is just terrible.

This bloody ball photo in conjunction with the bloody arse photo leads me to believe he has either no respect or no feeling in his nether regions. I feel sorry for him.

I don't understand what could possibly be gained by such a firm attachment to the saddle. Maybe slightly more power, but really how much can it be? Makes zero sense to me.

No kidding.
Maybe you can offer it in a recover? It could be your pro model.

Since there are definitely suitable alternatives, my guess is that he secretly likes the torture down there.

New theory:

He's a fan of masochism.

The pain increases his endorphins....he's getting high off the extra pain! Natural opiates.

I thought it was some issue with fit and UCI restrictions... Tony is far from the only rider who does this. The issue is something like you can't put the nose of the saddle far enough forward (has to be 5cm behind BB) so you have to sit on the very tip and you'll slide off without the grip tape. You can see a lot of riders like Contador who are constantly readjusting (pushing backwards) during a TT. Like every 4 seconds. I blame the UCI.

Did I see Tony in the WC road race? I'd have needed more time to heal before taking on a ride as long as the WC course.

Hockey tape is the latest of the old raised saddle end and cable attachment at the gut.

Martin seems okay with sacrificing his gooch for the stripes.
