There is another World Championship happening in the US this week at the Onondaga Nation, indoor (box) lacrosse. My son and I have caught a couple games and checked out the expo area featuring traditional wooden sticks.

Our reverence for the handmade frame builder reminded me of Alf Jacques, one of the few remaining traditional Iroquois stickmakers. Link is to a cool video showing him at work.

My son and I bought a wooden stick last weekend, sadly not one of Alfie's but one of his is on my list. Consider him the Richard Sachs of lax!

Just thought it was pretty cool.

Awesome stuff! Growing up on Long Island, I always had my dad telling stories of his high school lacrosse glory days - wooden sticks, natural leather, and getting whacked with a heavy wooden stick vs. playing with lightweight aluminum (when I was in high school it was AL... guess the kids all use composite now?).

I was sad when I bought my son a stick last week that even the wood shafts are a thing of the past. No composite for him though. Strictly alum.

To be fair, I was the only Mid on my college team with a wood stick, some 22 years ago, so the writing was on the wall then.
