View Full Version : Saw My First Camo Kit-Sort Of

Was driving a couple of days ago on a wide city street with lots of trees lining both sides. Sun was bright but lots of shadows from the trees. At the last second I "saw" a cyclist on my right as he rode in and out of the shadows. Had i been day-dreaming, I might not have seen him at all.

Here's the kicker. He was wearing a Camo colored kit. Jersey and shorts. Was it cool? Sure, kind of. But guess what...it made him essentially invisible in that particular situation. Really? Not sure this is optimum for living a long life.

I've seen similar kits and can't for the life of me understand someone thinking it's a good idea.

There's a guy I've seen at a couple of rural races who wears camo arm warmers, but his kit is "normal" and you could see him. Not that I could see him for long since he blasts his large chubby body along at ridiculous speed. The first time I met him I was surprised he rode a bike and figured he was in over his head. Then I saw him hammering by a long steep climb chatting with his buddy and looking like he was out for a Sunday stroll.

Hooray for busting stereotypes and knocking me down several rungs for making baseless assumptions on someone I didn't know.

Evolution has served us well, maybe we shouldn't interfere with it.

And at night they probably wear all-black kit with no lights on the bike. Because it's cool.

I'm glad to read that you didn't hit the guy. I always worry I will run over some cyclist riding like an idiot - there's no shortage around here.

That should be relegated to CX or mtn biking; fluorescent camo to one's drawer.

Some cyclists seem to think all motorists are looking for the chance to intentionally murder them, and the best way to stay safe is to be invisible so as to not become a target. I've seen list postings that say just that.

Elevengear (http://elevengear.com) has a whole line of High-Viz gear. They are indeed BRIGHT  , but the point is to be seen. ;)

I don't get the camo or black kit stuff. It's dicey enough out there and I want to be seen.

I recently picked up four of the Marvel cycling jerseys on eBay. They are well made, Cool Max lined, cheap and very bright.

A friend built a kayak and painted it seal skin color/pattern, guess what happened?
