View Full Version : I was wearing my pink Rapha jersey for the first time when I heard...

... a guy from a landscaping crew with an idiling weedwhacker shout out
"Real men wear pink!" (He was wearing a neon orange t-shirt FWIW)

First time in this new Classic jersey, and when I left the house I felt a bit self conscious (even though I was all over the pink B-squared button downs and the Chemise Lacoste polos during the first preppy invasaion...)

But this was 20 miles into the ride, and I had pretty much forgotten what I was wearing.
I was temped to stop and tell him about Marco Pantani and the Giro leader's jersey, but instead I just shouted back, "Thanks."

I think I'll keep it.

(No, that's not me in the pic, but it is my jersey. Quite a fetching shade of pink, doncha think?)

I think pink looks great on the bike, but when I wore it last someone yelled something much more profane at me. Love that jersey, good for you for having the confidence to fly the colors.

what makes you think he was being mean? maybe he was being totally serious and giving you congrats on having the cajones to wear it? possible...

when i got that original rapha brevet jersey with the bright pink vest my wife's first comment was "if ever you're going to be the victim of a cyclist hate crime, it will be while wearing that vest." and yeah I'm a little self-conscious wearing it, but it's SUPER bright, so excellent for riding at night. and I figure, meh, whatever, I'm sure the same people who would think something of me for wearing it are probably already thinking the same thing for prancing about on a bike in tight-fitting clothes with shaved legs, right?

Yep... that is my philosophy. With the, "I am a grown man in what in basically what amount to underwear, riding a bike, with shaved legs, for 60 miles in one days," reality who cares what color my jersey is. At that point they should be glad we are not wearing bibs without a jersey as some form cycling overalls! Rock the pink.

As a side note I am planning a build that will include as much pink King staff as I can incorporate!

It takes balls to wear pink, but quite frankly it takes balls to dress the way we do in general when we ride. I love pink, especially the little random pink dots on my Responsorium. If I coulda squeezed into one of those Rapha Pantani jerseys I woulda been totally game. And went full Monte and did the pink doo rag. Pink is the new Pink.

I wear pink socks, pink jerseys, pink ties, full-on pink scrubs. If anyone is so insecure in their sexuality that MY being in pink bothers them, well... can't help them. Pink rocks.

i'm a strong believer that when it comes to dress shirts, there are only three primary colors: white, blue, and pink.

too bad i don't have any pink jerseys, but i do have pink handlebar tape and pink accented bottle cages, and I usually wear wool socks with pink piping (wearing them atm). I still regret not forking over extra cash and get a pink CK R45 hub...

On the street cloth side, I have 3-4 pink dress shirts, a pink polo shirt, and a pink floral tie with a navy background, which happens to be my favorite. I wouldn't mind getting a few more pink polo shirts and one more dress shirt in a prince of wale check.

basically that's all i learned from my undergraduate years spent at an ivy league college: how to wear pastel colors with pride. When I buy my next car, which will be a Volvo V60 station wagon, I'm strongly considering getting a blue color and putting pink racing stripes on it

Which is why I stick to blue, orange, or green.

Before my daughters started school (2-3), they'd toddle in to my closet with me and I would let them select my shirts each day. If there was a pink shirt, they'd select it, and I would wear it.

Just to make it clear, the guy wasn't being mean. He was laughing when he said it, so I kind of took it as at least a half-compliment, and my "Thanks" was genuine, not sarcastic.

Basically that's all i learned from my undergraduate years spent at an ivy league college: how to wear pastel colors with pride.

True dat, Trip! It's kind of Lisa Birnbach meets Marco Pantani at a Vampire Weekend show.

I gotta say I love the jersey and my only hesitation is that it's harder to keep a light colored jersey clean. I do think it's funny that Rapha seems to be, um, cycling through all these shades of pink, some pale, some bright. I think this one's pretty well perfect, pretty saturated and with a little bit of "coral" to it.

I don't own anything pink, but that's not because I have something against it. I don't. I tend to dress tacky and wear dark colors. I feel like I'm too unkempt to pull off pink office attire. It would just look... Sad.

Anywho! Keep rocking pink everyone!

My girls are 6&7 and i still let them help me pick stuff out occasionally.

my eldest commented the other day that she doesn't like choosing shirts because they're all boring & white.

my ties are where I get color.

I had forgotten about this until just now, but I came this close to doing pink decals on my Serotta.
I was having it repainted--it was a very drab silver--and Miami Vice was in the air. Crockett and Tubbs. Unconstructed blazers. Vintage Ferraris. And the pink and turquoise palette of South Beach.

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTA2OFgxNjAw/z/OmoAAOSwpdpVYepB/$_57.JPG
(Just a random internet photo for illustration purposes.)

After much discussion, I settled on a turquoise/teal blue for the frame, with pink decals.

Keep in mind that this was 1989 or 1990 and there was no internet and believe it or not, Serotta didn't have a brochure or a color chart. So we picked the color over the phone and I naively assumed that everyone explained color the same way.

Fortunately before the bike landed in the paint booth, I went to a bike show (in Atlantic City IIRC) and met the good people of Serotta.
I looked at a bike on display and asked the guy (who I had been dealing with) "So which blue is that?"

"The blue we're painting your bike."

What I assumed was a rich, jewel-like turquoise right off an Art Deco mansion in Miami was just a washed-out metallic pale blue. Not cool.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/15011249589_e0c027d28a_b.jpg
(Another random web photo--the actual blue was even lighter and less saturated than this IIRC.)

A major miscommunication. And there was no blue that matched the Miami Vice image I had in my head.

So I wimped out. Blue became red. The pink decals became yellow.
This brave, contemporary color choice became just another red bike.

And I've never regretted it for a second.

I've since come to realize that I should save my fashion statements for handlebar tape. And that there's a reason why I don't have any tattoos.

I used to ride an early 90s hawt pink and white Colnago, really loved that bike. I was riding in Maine and stopped for a drink, a group of teenagers snickered at me as I walked by. My first reaction was anger at their lack of respect, but then I thought, 'Wait a second. Here I am, a pretty big guy stuffed into a pair of extremely tight shorts, riding around on a hot pink bicycle... How do I expect the teenagers of the world to treat me?'

well, in a way, he's right. if your definition of "real man" means you're comfortable with who you are and don't care what people think, etc.

something about pink bikes man... love 'em! don't know why! maybe it's because of this guy:
