No chroming jokes, please, atmo. So, chrome used to be the leather seats and sun-roof of bicycles. Presently, though, it seems to be out of fashion (like rumble seats, iirc). Considering that my cycling DNA pre-dates the discovery of DNA, I have a soft spot in my heart for chromed accents on a high-quality steel frame.

For all of the above, I would be delighted to read your views on chrome for parts of the frame such as lugs, stays, drop-outs, forks, et al. If you spice your essay with historical references, you just might get to ride the Pope's Colango when you die. Onward, upward, forward together, atmo. Spencer for President, Provo for capital city. Thank you kindly.

I love chrome stuff. But stainless has taken over.

And lugged bikes are kind of on the lunatic fringe nowadays anway.....

Just kidding. Seriously, I dig shiny stuff. But you gotta go to a custom builder today to get it and most won't do it anyway. 'cept Waterford and Vanilla.

Well, I-I-I would-I would like to take

Again, Annie's thoughts pop on: He probably thinks I'm a yo-yo.

Photography's interesting, 'cause, you
know, it's-it's a new art form, and a,
uh, a set of aesthetic criteria have
not emerged yet.

And Alvy's: I wonder what she looks like naked?

ANNIE
Aesthetic criteria? You mean, whether
it's, uh, good photo or not?

I'm not smart enough for him. Hang in there.

ALVY
The-the medium enters in as a condition
of the art form itself. That's-

ANNIE
Well, well, I ... to me-I ... I mean,
it's-it's-it's all instinctive, you

it, you know? I try to get a sense of

aesthetic guide lines to put it in
social perspective, I think.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man.
It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity.
It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between
science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's
fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension
of imagination. It is an area which we call the Panama Canal Zone.

Chrome involves some nasty environmental issues, atmo, and not too many folks in the U.S. will do it anymore. Baylis, I think, and Cyclart still have access. Mike Barry will do chrome on a Mariposa but it's tricky, like no head tubes because they seem to crack when installing headsets.

I thought of asking for an all chrome Mariposa and I'm still in line for a lugged bike that will use all classic French road parts, like a Singer or Herse road bike: fenderless, Huret ders., Mafac brakes, Ideale saddle, Maxicar hubs, 6spd, like that. I'm not sure this is still possible but if it is then that'll be the next Mariposa here in Bristol. This is a bit off thread but since Mike is among the only builders I know who still does some chrome, if you are interested in a Mariposa I would get in line RIGHT NOW. Mike may not long remain at the bench. He has other interests, like riding about Europe with his grandson.
