View Full Version : Did I pay too much? Antiquing find of the year!

I have been known to frequent antiquing establishments from time to time. Yard sales, antique stores or flea markets it's all good. I go in hoping to find some choice vintage bike parts and always leave either empty handed or better yet with some quirky old item that captured my imagination. During one of my antiquing adventures this year, I walked by a set of old license plates and thought nothing of it. As I proceeded to peruse yet another pile of crusty dusty old fools gold with my eyes, my mind was still searching the stuff I walked by. Suddenly I realized I walked by something special - FRED! I ran back, picked up the plate and saw the price tag $20! For an old license plate? Actually for an old vanity motorcycle plate with FRED written on it. This was perfect for my cycle cave. All doubt subsided, I decided to go through with the purchase. I bought another cool item from them which I got a $2 discount on. Adhering to picker logic I guess you could say I got it for $18, not too shabby me thinks.

Best thing of all, due to the custom drilled holes it mounts perfectly on the seat rails with some zip ties.

I found some other really neat stuff this year, including an 8speed Athena wheel set with cassette for $15, nice! The only time I actually found bike parts worth buying at an antique store.

Anyone else have any nifty antiquing finds this year?

If its 1st gen 8spd then the cassette will be a bitch to source if you need to replace it.

I never thought about finding Athena wheels in an antique store, guess I will have to check some local stores out.

the difference is the step on the cassette body, if one of your 9spd cogs fit you're good to go. If not flog them on ebay ;)

Damn, that's cool.

If I'm out cruising, I'll sometimes stop by yard sales in hopes of finding some vintage cycling stuff. Hasn't happened yet, but hey, there's hope!

I like it!

We're in the Hudson Valley area--and there used to be quite a few fine artists who either had summer places to escape from Manhattan, or moved out here.

We had a guy come to our garage sale who regaled us with tales of great finds of original oil paintings, Tiffany stuff, even collectible mid-century modern furniture.

Yet every time I stop at a yard sale, I find junk.

The best bike deal I made was on three 70s era Nuovo Record wheels--I think I paid $5 each at the Goodwill store.

2nd gen, exa-drive 8s cogsets fit onto first gen. 'Alphabet' Campag FH bodies.

The wheels were hanging outside a shop as decoration for some time, I was more than happy to save them from their salty coastal demise.

Apologies for not posting pictures of the wheels, here they are... (my cycle cave is a mess of late)

Pretty sure they are Athena hubs. The rear hub has an engraved Campagnolo band in the center, however no removable band or grease port like on the Chorus and Record 8 speed hubs. Though in my 1993 Campagnolo catalog the Athena rear hubs does not appear to have an engraved band in the center. The cassette is a 2nd gen Exa-drive and looks to be in good nick. I think the Titanium 8 speed cassettes are even harder to find. Laced up with double butted spokes, wheel smith I think (they have a W on the head of the spoke) to Mavic Reflex SUP rims.

Damn, that's cool.

Keep an eye out, actually I found the plate very close to the NH border. However finding good bike parts in these places is near impossible. More often than not I find some guy named Chester trying to tell me his rusted out (just patina) Peugeot UO8 is a vintage racing bike that was raced in the Tour of Frank and that it is well worth the $300 asking price. And if I don't buy it he knows 20 college students who will. I then show Chester a picture or two of real vintage race beauty and offer my 2c on the joys of working on cottered cranks. After that the price usually falls to a more realistic $50, having overhauled a number of UO8s in my day I politely decline their generous offer.

Amen to that!

Yeah I dig it.

Modern art :crap:. I get it, create it and like some of it, but sometimes... Visited the Harvard Fogg Art Museum not too long ago, got to the modern art section, all I have to say is yellow beads, wax and pubic hair ... and I'm out.

Campagnolo at a Goodwill, wow that's a score. Never thought I would hear those two in the same sentence.

A few other nicks and nacks I found this year 2 oil cans, one polished up very nice and turned out to be a bit of a collectors item, just no cap so all is lost. Eerie leather toddler shoes. I bought them for a creepy sculpture I had in mind, but got too creeped out to go through with it. Perhaps the coolest thing I found this year - Arcade Crystal No.3 Coffee Grinder circa 1918ish. Unfortunately no hopper or catcher but the hand ground coffee does taste better than from an electric grinder. I still have to make a wooden mount for it and find some kind of hopper.

Also I had to get this embroidery piece, I am a sucker for good composition. Still trying to figure out if its original and where it came from. I fear I will have to join a knitting/embroidery forum of some sort to find out more.

Post your finds if you got em.
