Think they pretty much coincided with Interbike, brand new. Good design tho, got to be impressed with a company that spends the $ for a new extrusion.

My complaint is that they have dropped a few very good rims recently. By good, I mean high quality rims with a good ride feel and you can mount a non tubeless tire easily.

Not being in closer contact with MD at Velocity, which have been discontinued?

One example is the Synergy and Synergy OC.

Yikes, a 415g 700c road clincher rim for rim brakes from Velocity? How can this in any way yield a durable wheel for anyone heavier than the low 100s and doesn't ride on glassy smooth roads ?

I saw these at Interbike and was pretty impressed - basically a slightly smaller Aileron made for rim brakes. I'd expect them to build similarly.

Bump... any real world reports on these?

TIA!

Looks like a slightly wider version of the DT swiss R460.

It's been a few months, does anyone have any experience with the Quill be it from building, riding or rumor scenarios?

I was not able to get a replacement Synergy OC but they did send us a regular blem Synergy at a good price.

Heard through the wire that Velocity has suspended production of the quill to work on quality control issues.

A pal at a local shop (Stone's) built a set and loves them. Light, nice profile, etc. He also relayed the story about Velocity having QC problems, though his pair are fine. I would ask Velocity for the latest.

bumping this thread to get any updates from "those in the know" ...

2 wheelsets that will need rebuilding in early 2017 and this rim is towards the top of my list.

I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop on a rim that looks like half of the other rims on the market at ~50 grams less... Also curious about it, but very skeptical on durability.

Ergott recommended these rims for a build he did for me recently. Almost the same profile - 25mm deep by 24mm wide with an inside of 19.86mm. Welded seam and 435g. Very sharp looking rom, too.

Was just about to do a thread search on this rim, having noticed it today on the Velocity site. They dont list a weight. I do note that they seem to have a comparatively thin brake track-3.4mm-judging by the external/internal widths given. Compare Belgium Plus at 5mm (assuming 20 internal which I seem to recall)
I am looking for a rim to build with a dyno hub that will get swapped between a tandem and a single bike; one that gets a lot of winter commuting miles in sand and salt. So I think I want something a little more substantial.

Belgium Plus are about 21 mm internal.

Belgium Plus are about 21 mm internal.

I stand corrected.

Also just noticing NHAero's post-regarding internal/external width-the Velocity site lists 21.1/24.5. That's where I was getting the 3.4mm thickness.

Thinking about building my next wheel with these but they dont seem to be in stock anywhere

from the diagram in post #1, internal width is measured from tip of the 'hooks', not related to the brake track thickness at all.

All the velocity diagrams are like that. I think is just a distortion and is intended to indicate interior width. Or perhaps better described as a "cartoon" than a properly drafted diagram. (Note also that the right arrow on the outer width indicator ends far short of the right side wall) Also, these internal width measurements do seem to be in line with other manufacturers. If this is distance between hooks, the velocity rims would have to be significantly thinner across the board. Another thing is that I cant understand why they would give a "between hooks" dimension. Does not seem discussed elsewhere or given by other manufacturers. So pretty sure this is internal dimension. Perhaps someone can confirm this.

I didn't think the rims were available separately, I thought Boyd only sold complete wheels.

Email away to 'my guy' at Velocity..I'll let ya know what he says.

I see the DT411 is starting to come into the market too..very light, rim brake, rim..

I was informed last fall that MD was no longer at Velocity. That's too bad, as he was great to work with. Hope he moved on to something great. Of course, I'm only assuming that is who you were referencing because you mentioned him earlier in the thread.

End of February, beginning of March for Quill rims. Pacenti Brevet rims look really good and Kirk has them now(Forza also).
