Be careful out there. My thoughts go out the friends and family.

I thought you meant me, and then I looked and saw the comment after the story. You are right, but I've grown to accept it up here in upstate NY.

Blame the victim. Gawd I hate that, so much.

Really close to where I live. I'll be curious to see what the toxicology tests and cell phone analysis show. Innocent until proven guilty, but I'll put my money on some impairment over the scenario of a 21-yo falling asleep at the wheel at 4:00 on a summer afternoon.

I've had a few close calls this summer. The closest had less to do with cell phones and more aggressiveness/disinterest in my presence (took a right-hand turn in front of me as I continued straight down a road).

I'm ready for this phenomena to slow down and the roads to get safer.

"be careful out there"

this is good advice but what in particular do you think a cyclist should do to avoid this exact mishap?

There are some things that are unavoidable no matter what precautions are taken. But there are some measures that can be taken. Putting aside lights, etc, just recognizing that every car you encounter may be driven by someone who is impaired, and likely by someone who is distracted, can be a start. Staying vigilant, aware and defensive sounds like cliche, but how often does your mind wander on a 5 hr training ride? I know I have to remind myself to stay focused at times. Avoiding main thoroughfares during rush hour is something else I do. Why take a chance with everyone rushing home in their cars while chatting on their phones.

And how can you plan for a driver that falls asleep at the wheel at 3:30pm? The only solution is to stay vigilant
