I will get us going here...

Almost out for the entire week because of a flareup with gout on my right foot. Not quite 100% yet (still some ache and slight pain) but just got to get those miles in before that major ride coming up in a couple of weeks at Fort Davis (http://www.wheelbrothers.com/2014-fort-davis-cyclefest-tour/)...or else there will be a blood bath. So, went and joined the ACA ride at Liberty Hills, going to Burnet and back, 64 miles, about 2900 ft of climbing. It was quite a haul. I was completely dead at the end. Glad I got those miles in but the gout got worse after I got home, rested most of the day, now I felt better. The recovery meal was good though, acted upon my friend Jim's recommendation and bought a tub of chocolate milk by PromisedLand ...oh gosh, it was the creamiest thing I have ever tasted, it's like melted ice-cream, yum!

Anyway, rode with a very nice group of people, the pace was reasonable, a bit of a challenge with my gout issue but it wasn't too bad. And it wasn't too hot, thanks to plenty of cloud cover that day and also benefited from quite a bit of tailwind along the way. Thanks to Tom for being the ride organizer and coming back with Keith to pick me up when I had a mini-episode of bonk and falling behind the group.

Weisan-pal---if it is indeed gout, take it very easy, take some anti-inflammatories like naproxen (Aleve) and if not improving over the next couple of days, probably a good idea to see your doctor.

Thanks for the suggestion, thwart-pal, and your concern. I am taking Colchicine and iBuprofen. Yes, it's gout for sure. I had it happened 3 or 4 times now - but all different locations of the foot. First one started at the heel of my left foot. Second one on the big toe of the right foot. And this time around, it's somewhere in the middle of my right foot. The first time that it happened three years ago, I have no idea what it was and the pain was...how do I describe it? Ah, I know, this picture will help...:D

It was the most excruciating pain I have EVER experienced in my life, not something I would wish on my worst enemy, really. I am still trying to figure out what triggers it. So far, I narrowed it down to "tofu". I know...it really doesn't make much sense, that's why it's still a "theory". According to medical brain trust, alcohol and red meat can lead to gout but I don't touch either of them...I just don't. Every time that it happened, I can look back and see how I did have a few pieces of tofu in one of my meals the day or two before, not a huge quantity, mind you, but I guess it was enough. I think the changes my body have gone through over the years as i get older is also a factor. Things that I can get away with...the junk that I consume...my body has become less tolerant, so maybe a change of diet is in order which is fine...as long as I can continue with fried chicken. Stress played a part too, I think. Anyway, sorry to take us slightly off this thread. I hope some of this information will help someone or maybe get others who have prior experience to chime in or PM me.

09/06/15 Burned off some of the carnitas I ate on Saturday by riding the Olympic Road Race course in Mission Viejo, Live Oak Canyon, and Santiago Canyon. Average temp was 101 with a max of 118.

Here is a picture of the Trabuco General Store in Trabuco Canyon. This and nearby Silverado Canyon remind me of a bygone era of simpler times and life. Or maybe I just have selective memory. Either way, it is always nice to ride through here and fill up on water.

Some of my in-laws' friends took me up their local Torture-climb: Kain hill.
https://www.strava.com/activities/386378809/segments/9242678309

The climb is about 1.2km in length, starting at 16% and touching 20 and even 22%. Obviously, I went out too hard and overcooked it, but still managed to reach the summit in 8:00 (2:48 slower than the KOM on Strava), 2 minutes ahead of second place guy and 6 minutes ahead of the chief trashtalker on the ride (which felt great!).

When we got to the top (10:35AM), the ice cream shop wasn't open yet! Oh well, we turned around and rode back.

A beautiful 95km to kick off the weekend!

I gathered some friends for a 77mile/4000' of climbing ride yesterday. Weather was perfect, wife and daughter drove the "team car" with fluids, PBJ sandwiches and homemade brownies. Couple really nice longish climbs as well as an unexpected bit of "hike a bike" bridge out section.

My wife and I on a 63 mile metric century route in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia. Some pics of the VA countryside, my wife climbing a roller, the white post in the middle of the only intersection in White Post, VA, and a pic near Blandy experimental farm at the VA state arboretum.
