What's going on with the moto's taking out riders lately in the pro races??? Paulinho was taken out today in the Vuelta and this is only a few days after the same thing happened to Sagan. There's also the rider in the Tour of Utah that was hit by a moto and let's not forget Taylor Phinney's huge crash because of a motorcycle.

Totally inexcusable. I thought race directors would ensure this doesn't happen after the car hit Hoogerland in the 2012 TdF. It's dangerous enough for the riders without being taken out by a car or moto.

Greg van Avermaet too.

Seems to be just too many vehicles and trying to get too close.

Correction, the Tour of Utah was a rider and car...and it was mostly the rider's fault. But this was followed by a couple of riders and a moto...here's the video.

An improvement over Jesper Skibby?

There was also that nasty crash in the TdF a few years ago ago that put the rider in the barbed wire fence...

Handling skills while high in the pro peloton have gotten worse.

Get off my lawn.

Fixed that for you.

Just saw somebody on my facebook remark, and I agree, "Pro racing is about as believable as the WWE."

I brought this up Sunday but got no replies. Strange, thought someone would have something to say.
Looks like it's continuing and becoming a more common occurrence. I know the fault can go both ways, so I guess each situation is a case of its own.
What do the moto drivers do when this happens? Check on the rider? Say sorry (if their fault)? Or just keep on going as if nothing happened.
I can tell you if a moto took me out through no fault of my own, and tried to just ride off, let's say the driver & I better not cross paths after the race.

Well, there are cops, race 'guides' and directors, safety people, neutral support, and any news organization that throws some $/Euros at the race, hops on a motorcycle. Add 2 cars per team, medical car, neutral support cars, race referees, blah....yes, I think there are way more than maybe need be and some see it as an excuse for hauling ass around the country side. Not surprised it's happening so much.

Get off my lawn.Except Peter Sagan is one of the best out there and they still took him out.

Half the motos could be replaced with drones.

(I'm sure that would be problem-free!)

I haven't seen this latest one but re-watching the Tour of Utah one there is so much fail in that video. Riders who have no idea how to take a safe line, neutral cars driving & cornering way too hard around the riders, etc.. motorcycle riders being idiots and stopping in the corner (motorcyclists will practically beat the sh*t out of other motorcyclists for doing something like that out in the moto world), etc, etc, etc..

Interesting conflict of interest with the organizers/tv companies vs the riders/teams.

Sagan had little 'stop-in' with a moto in this years TdF. Pulled right up behind him while the mechanic was trying to change the wheel. I think benb is pretty close to right -- conflict of interest: riders needing space to do their jobs and 'press' trying to get 'the best shot'. Methinks the press AND the spectators need to just back off.

Speaking of Sagan, did you guys see this when he punched the commissioner's car?

the temper tantrum was why he got fined. He should have just grabbed the keys from the moto and thrown them down a storm drain

This whole thing is nuts. Can you imagine if a TV cameraman interfered with a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl causing a change in results?

In this Vuelta, Sagan was in the green jersey when the moto took him out. Not sure how much he and his team would have earned if he won this, but this moto's actions certainly impacted Sagan and his team financially...wonder if they could sue him?

Looks like there are some very unhappy riders out there (understandably so) about this issue and this is certainly drawing some attention. Here's a quote from CyclingNews...

Bugno (president of the CPA) called for a "fast and urgent meeting in Aigle" between the CPA and the UCI road commission "where the riders can explain their demands to finally stop this bloodbath".

Here's the link to the article...

The opening line of that article is pretty fuego too:

"The Vuelta a Espana managed to get through stage 12 without a rider being taken out by a race vehicle - a feat which seems to be quite an accomplishment"

looking at the video, paulinho wasnt hit by the moto...paulinho did the hitting, but that doesnt absolve the moto. the problem is that the moto got in the way.

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/paulinho-abandons-vuelta-a-espana-after-being-hit-by-moto/

these moto drivers dont respect the race and dont respect how fast the pro-tour guys can go on the pedal-bikes!

similar situation with mini-phinney's gruesome accident, the bikes ran the moto down. when a 15# bike tangles with a 500# moto...the bike will lose *every* time.
