So, yes, I know road stuff pretty well BUT can a shimano road 11s cogset fit onto a shimano MTB 11s rear hub or wheel? I thought I read somewhere that a shimano 11s cogset will fit onto a 10s MTB hub or wheel..so I'm confused.

Thinking about trying to build a cross wheelset for somebody using shimano road 11s cogset..Can I use say XT 11s hubs? M8000..compatible with a road 11s cogset?

My understanding is that shimano did not change the freehub width on 11spd mtb. The larger cogs allows them to dish the cassette over the flange and spokes. I think a 11spd mtb cassette will fit on a 10spd road hub but an 11spd road cassette won't fit on a mtb hub.

The shimano CX75centerlock hubs are spaced 135mm and are 11spd.
Does it need to be a thru axle?

I know, my question is does a road shimano 11cogset fit onto it? I don't think it does but don't know.

I'm 99% sure those are 8, 9 , 10 and 11 speed.
Road or mountain cassette.

No, this won't work.

Shimano MOUNTAIN 11s cassettes will fit onto 10s MTB hubs, but ROAD 11s cassettes will not fit on 10s MTB hubs. Weird, I know.

No, XT M8000 hubs will not accept a road 11s cassette. Like someone else mentioned, the CX75 hubs would work for your application. They are available as 28 hole centerlock disc 135 mm spacing.

Cx75 will definitely take a 11s shim road cassette

99% sure a 11s road cassette will NOT fit onto m8000 and m9000 hub body's too but I will check today to know for sure.

What does not fit would be say a rd 11s cassette into say a 785 hub, not would a shim MTB 11s cassette on a 985, etc.

Not true according to QBP. The M9000 hub page says "Not compatible with Shimano 11-Speed Road cassettes"

As I understand it, the answer is no. That is, I believe Thirdgenbird is correct. The road 11-sp freehub is slightly longer, I think 1.85mm. So they include a spacer if you want to put a 10-sp road cassette on an 11-sp road freehub. Up through 10-sp both the road and mtn freehubs were the same length. For 11-sp they were able to keep the same length for mtn cassettes but not for road. Most cyclocross use the road standards so if it's 11-sp compatible I would assume that means 11-speed road - agree w/Fatty on that one.

I've got a new adventure bike on order that uses 12x142. I must say it's been a learning experience trying to find a 2nd set of wheels. It's been very difficult to find wheels and/or hubs that are 135/142, through axle, disc ready & road 11-speed. I expect there will be many more in the future but, for now, I've been getting mtn bike wheels and converting to road 11-speed using a new freehub and end caps. Both Easton and DT Swiss allow this rather easily. There are others too though I don't think Shimano is on that list.

Right, typo

I even checked with a DA 9000 cassette I have lying around and those m8000 wheels I've got on classifieds ....

11t doesn't bite on hub body slots.

White Industries have released the CLD hub which marries CL Disc, 12X142 and road 11 speed together. DT Swiss makes a hub too but it may not be available. Sorry to get off topic.

I've seen a crazy mt Washington set up ...

Was a King r45 road wheel, (laced to a Enve 3.4 not that is matters, just for context) with an XTR m9000 cassette. So I would say likely yes but maybe not in all cases.

The gent hooked up his existing d/a di2 with an XTR 9050 front and rear mech, (crankset too) and an XTR cassette.

Worked like a charm

So would an 11s mountain cassette fit on a 10s road wheel?

Yes. 100% affirmative.

But I think 11s mtn cassette cog spacing MIGHT be different?

If NOT, take a look at the wolf tooth components "road link" - a rd hanger extension that allows the use of up to a 40t cog using a ROAD rd and shifters.

Pretty cool stuff.

I'm not sure about the spacing either. I like to think that it is, but not positive. I also wonder if the small cog is the same distance from the drive side dropout and will assume no on that question. So switching wheels between 11-sp road and 11-sp mtn will require a RD adjustment.

For my use, the problem with an 11-sp mountain cassette is that, at least for Shimano, they only come in 11-40 or 11-42 versions. If you want the largest cog in a smaller size, you are out of luck. Those big cassettes could be useful for extreme climbing on dirt but not so useful for Cx, road or mixed road/light trail. So then, you are back to 11-sp road.
