Just back from my first bikepacking trip in CO. Seven cross bike performed well, but next time I want a mountain bike. Looking in the $1000 price range and would appreciate input from the forum. Will also use as my primary mountain bike, riding N. Georgia trails. The Vassago looks hard to beat, but would love real world input. If you have something you are looking to unload, I'm all ears . . . the Cielo is just beyond my budget! Thanks!

If I were to buy a HT right now, the Verhauen would be it. The numbers look just right on paper and they get good reviews. I have not ridden one though. Another suggestion is the Salsa El Mariachi which I have owned. It's less expensive and is a great frame, assuming we are talking about the current iteration. Both frames are very similar on paper. The 2016 Salsas are ugly though, if that matters to you.

The Niner ROS 9 might be up your alley if you're looking for a steel frame and it's slightly under your budget.

Never heard of them before...but they look really good and the price is spot on. The builder also seems to have tons of experience...The national forest explorer looks bad ass...

Thanks, bikenut. Looking closely at the Elephants now. Anyone ride one of their 29ers?
