I have had good luck with 28 Panaracer gravel kings. They roll pretty good on a road burn and are durable once you hit the dirt. I dont think i will use anything else on gravel im sold on these things.

Clement MSO's here. The best gravel tire I've ever used.

Another MSO 32c happy camper. I want to try the 40c version next. If it rolls as well as the 32c, then I'm done shopping for tires.

If it's not too sloppy, Kenda small block 8s.

There's gravel and then there's gravel.

Panaracer's Pasela (non-TG/PT) is inexpensive, rides nicely, and works well on hardpack dirt and mild gravel. If you want something sturdier, the Gravelking is a good choice. Need more traction, get the 32 mm Gravelking (it has a different tread pattern). If your conditions will allow the use of a slick/road tire, get the Compass Stampede Pass.

nobody ever has their location set in their profile. When my riding was in the mountains of Virginia, I was happy using any old tire. I used to ride tubulars on gravel without issue. Here in Central PA, the DNCR seems to have an endless budget, which they use putting down new gravel everywhere. I started riding gravel on some smaller 32mm tires, went to much larger 32mm tires, and now I'm on 38mm tires. They are still a bit sketchy on some of the deeper gravel.

A good first trial could be Pasela as they are pretty good on pavement and mild to medium gravel. When the gravel gets bigger/deeper I want at least 35mm wide and wider is even better to prevent the wheel from sinking too deep.

SOMA's C-Line is good if you want a little more flotation but don't need knobbies.

I run a kenda Karvs 28c to run on gravel, dirt, some rocks.

They are basically as fast as a road tire on pavement but grip like a cx tire on terrain. Plus they easily fit dual-pivot road brakes and I would guess almost all frames and forks.

Thanks for all the responses guys. The wheels/tires are for a friends bike, and she wasn't sure which way to go. I have stripped her frame to re-finish, and now would be the time for disc tabs or canti mounts to be brazed. Ball is in her court, at least now she has some options.

I've been running and very happy with the Continental Cyclocross Speed 35mm tires. They're quiet on the road and ride well on gravel roads and gravel "off" roads (think 4x4 jeep roads). I may try a set of the Clement MSO 32's to see what all the fuss is about though.

Almost all of my rides these days consist of a mix or dirt/gravel/pavement. I've been running the 35c Club Roost Cross Terra Tires for a few years now and I like that they are inexpensive, durable, and have a good balance of traction vs low rolling resistance. I have no problem hanging with the hammer heads on the road and I don't give hitting the gravel a second thought. So far (knock on wood), no flats. I've recommended them before but no one seems to take me up on it...that's okay, more for me.

I've had pretty great luck with my Conti's. I've done everything from commuting to racing on them.

I've had good luck with my Jets as well, running them about 65-70 PSI.

Ritchey SpeedMax is a good, low cost option, too. $55-60 pair.

I've had good performance from Clement LAS 33s, Ritchey SpeedMax 32s and Pasela PT 32s. The Clement LAS measure closer to 35 mm and work better in deeper gravel than the other two. The Paselas don't have much tread if the going gets muddy.

I recently picked up Panaracer Gravelking 28s for commuting and they roll very nicely, are relatively light weight, and measure a true 28-29 mm wide (unlike many so-called 28s). I have not ridden them on gravel yet and presume that they will work fine for a 28, but I prefer at least 32s for gravel. I also have some Rivendell Ruffy Tuffy 28s that handle gravel just fine, but don't have any tread and are rather sluggish on the road.

I've had good look with the happy medium from Kenda. I am really liking the clement tires now and have been quite happy with them.

I'll throw in a plug for Bruce Gordon Rock 'n Roads. Bomb through the deepest gravel and run well on asphalt. And I'm a sucker for tan walls.

Yes, that's right.

Added them to my Fargo and that's what that baby was asking for all along.
