Recently I've been enamored with the idea of a XO-1/2 modern day equivalent bike for tooling around the city and some light trails in the presidio. Looking to find road race geo + 650b wheel compatibility (and the level top tube is nice). I'd still like it to feel pretty aggressive, so I'd rock drop bars and road bike positioning.

So far I see:
Surly Straggler 650b: http://surlybikes.com/bikes/straggler_650b
Soma Grand Randonneur: http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/grand-randonneur-frame-set
Surly Long Haul Trucker: http://surlybikes.com/bikes/long_haul_trucker
Rivendell Atlantis: http://www.rivbike.com/Rivendell-Atlantis-p/f-atlantis.htm

I am leaning towards the Straggler, as the rest seem to have geo in the more relaxed realm. Any suggestions for other frames to check out?

None of those would satisfy me. I'd get a Boulder Bicycle 650b If I wanted fun, or an Elephant NFE if I wanted fun plus loads, Or mix it up and get a Cannondale Slate or a custom Zanc/Hampsten. Or I'd convert a 90s 700c road bike.
Still, he SOMA looks good for what you want. The Surlys are all sort of crummy price-point frames that I think will ride meh. Atlantis isnt price-point, but it's way way overbuilt for what you want and not 650b. NFE would be way better option there.

Waterford can make you this very bike. Call Richard.

Agreed.

Also think about the new Rawland Ravn when it shows up.

Interesting design I think.

26 inch wheels?? seems like it would be a more marketable 650b...

I don't like the Radavist (and I do like Blasdelf), but this is good reading on the NFE: http://theradavist.com/2015/07/elephant-bikes-national-forest-explorer-with-gevenalle-shifting/#1

You could well be right on this point.

Also, I'm interested in the new Compass Rat Trap tires.

Might be an interesting option for the fire roads up a our cabin where I do a bunch of riding all summer.

This was my first thought.

rawland is also making a 650B disk road bike.

I would get a elephant if I was in the market for exactly what you want. Seem like good bikes, good looking, great clearance, disk brakes, made in USA. But I bet because of all the radavist publicity of late (which is good for elephant), might be hard to get one atm.

BTW, I had a 1993 Bridgestone XO-2. It was a good bike, but I am not nostalgic for it at all. A modern steel bike will kill it in ride quality.

The wait list for a 'stock' NFE was nearly 60 deep when I got on the list.
Seeing as they build 25 per run it could be a while...

Lots of choices. I got a Soma GR when I was looking to experience the 650B thing. My intention was to get a custom if I decided I liked 650B. A funny thing happened though, I just keep riding the heck out of the GR and the custom is still un-ordered. I've had more fun on this bike than any other I've ridden. Every time I get on it I just smile. It is wonderful on the linear collection of potholes we call roads here in new england and great on dirt. Comfortable yet fast enough to keep up with my friends.

The only conditions I find it lacking in is really coarse blue stone/rocky gravel or very soft sand. For these conditions I would like more float, so I have a Rawland Ravn on order...

My SO has an XO-2. She hasn't ridden it much lately. I put some Kojak 2" tires on it so she could use it when we did D2R2. Her impression? He likes her steel road bike better...

That bike cannot possibly be of any use. It doesn't even have electronic shifting or disc brakes for goodness sake. How can you climb a hill, or go down a hill or ride on an unpaved path without disc brakes?

Wasn't the Handsome Devil built as an XO-1 clone?

Yes, but they don't make it any more.

I had a custom Rivendell All-Rounder. I loved my MB-1 and was enamoured with the idea of an XO-1, too. The All-Rounder was beautiful, but I ended up selling it. I'd probably still have it if I had lost the moustache bar and Brooks saddle and had put downtube shifters on. : Hunter Cycles (http://www.huntercycles.com/) might be an option to look at.
