...new burbon distillery. This type of thing is opening all over the area. Hard to believe the market will support another one.

Really? I just drive by yesterday. I was a lite sad. The sign is still hanging in front, covered by overgrown bushes.

Maybe it isn't that big a leap from boutique bikes to boutique bourbon.

I think you have to let the bourbon age a wee bit more than a tad longer. That's with ti and carbon - not sure about steel...

I thought you could only call it bourbon if it was produced in a certain part of Kentucky? Otherwise it's only whiskey?

I bet $1000 that it's a non-distiller producer. It's a tough task to put the money in to distill bourbon and then age it long enough to where it's drinkable. That's a LOT of cash to sit there for a long time with zero return.

Most new bourbon start ups will buy their whiskey from MGP in Indiana.

Seriously! What a great name and logo! However, the squirrel looks like it's poppin' a squat..

It really isn't. Craft distilleries are the new thing - all the kids are doing it! I can't keep up with all of the micro breweries and distilleries that have popped up in the Austin area in the past few years. The market for craft brews and liquors seems to be significantly bigger than the one for hand-made bikes. They make fantastic presents! :)

I wish these guys all the luck.

That's funny (or maybe not to someone that worked there....)!

That's just sad.. especially if they're not actually making their own whiskey. Think about how many memories were made in that Serotta factory.

So what's that, just someone who thinks they can do marketing better than MGP?

Largely, you are right, but some companies do additional filtering, coloring, flavoring to the bulk stuff they buy. I'm not at all saying it justifies the prices, but they do often do something more than add marketing. Something like the below, but on a large scale:

MGP doesn't bottle and market their own stuff. They strictly manufacture to sell to third party bottlers. Lots of companies do it, but their back stories are all marketing BS.

I'm not saying it's not good whiskey, as I happen to like Bulleit which does the same thing.

Which is very similar to George Dickel and...

Bulleit does have a good rye for a reasonable price point though.

Interesting... Thanks for posting this.

That really sucks if true. It's kinda like private-labeling a Far Eastern, open-mould frame. The Ritte of the whiskey world if you will... :(

No need to go to CF - wood is a composite and anisotropic.

I'll take that bet!

Article says that he plans to make rye, bourbon, light and dark run, and vodka. He is currently waiting for his still to arrive from Germany (why have a still if you aren't go to distill?...OK, I admit that it could be just for show).

In the meantime, he has established a hacker house tech incubator/shared work space with 5 members already to share "the cost of upkeep on the property." And that is just the first of what he envisions as several tenants, including the local brewer he is currently in talks with. Sounds like he may have a pretty good plan

I'm with jmoore on this. Lag/aging time is too long to ship anything worthy in the next 18 months. Whatever the hype: Show me the aged drams.

Not aware he was already selling, so that indicates current status. But that is often a bridge to having your own distilled/aged product, so who knows, we may both be correct in the long run?

Going through the pretty comprehensive list of distillers/producers (http://recenteats.blogspot.com/p/the-complete-list-of-american-whiskey.html), I was pleased to see that nearly every one of the products that I imbibe, and most of the Oregon producers, are in-house distillers.

Another point in the article about factory distillation that I found interesting is the concept that so much of, for instance, rye these days is coming from the one factory source, it is pretty much defining what rye "should" taste like across the board.

Quote A hacker house is a term for a collection of tech-savvy people who live and work together. The former headquarters of Serotta bicycles at 41 Geyser Road is now home to Ant Hill, a startup designed to match local people with local jobs. The distillery is the dream of city native Ryen Van Hall , who bought the 3 1/2 acre property for $1.25 million.

Geez, you can't buy a 1 bedroom condo in San Francisco for 1.25 mil. much less 3.5 acre with those buildings.

Funny...

I think that guy owns the land and that barrel... There's nothing that says "distillery" about that.

I would guess he'll repackage someone else's juice with a hint of some sort of flavor as is the case with probably 80% of the brands on the shelf at the local...
