My father in-law lives in Manhattan and needs to declutter/decontent/streamline/unload some high end audio equipment. Note this is not a for-sale post, I'm just looking for some insight on the best way to accomplish this. He's not going to put anything on craigslist, not his style (or era). Is there a store in NYC (he's Upper West side) where they could help sell and keep a commission? Not sure what the market is for this? Is there even (much of) a market anymore for high-end audio? Thanks!

I have sold many components and speakers on audiogon.com if willing to ship.

What exactly is he looking to sell?

I'm an audio nut myself, and I have a good friend in New York who's sold a lot of high end stuff both online and in and around the city. I'd be happy to give you his email to pass on (he lives in Washington Heights, or the upper, upper west side). He might be able to help out for a commission, or at least give some advice. I think your father in law would make more money this way, rather than bringing it into a shop, if that's a concern. There are definitely shops in NYC that would be interested in the gear.

There's definitely a market for high end audio, though a lot of it depends on what it is; certain tube amps and speakers are classics, while most old high end cd players aren't. Feel free to PM me and I'll give you my friend's email.

I've bought and sold a lot of stuff on Audiogon as well and it works. You can pay a minimal fee to see how much stuff has sold for and set prices that way too. I am curious too as to what he is selling. Keep in mind when setting prices that unlike bikes stereo equipment can really degrade over time (caps in an amp, cd disc drawer gears, etc) so don't get too ambitious with pricing if you want whatever it is to sell.

As long as the audio is really considered high-end gear and not what a non-enthusiast might consider high-end gear because it cost more than what could be found outta BestBuy. Like how a Spesh/Trek/dale is not exotica but mass market consumer on this forum. If the f-in-law has enthusiast-class audio he will know he has this caliber gear because it is not common to buy that kind of gear without knowing the specialist marketplaces where this is procured - and it isn't from a mall.

Higher end stuff gets bought & sold all the time on Audiogon. There is almost always a market for top of the line gear.

High-end audio isn't so much a problem IMO in living space for the equipment, it is making enough space for the vinyl LPs that feed to music habit.

I have used Audiogon, but for one stop shop that can handle everything, he might try: http://www.audioclassics.com/

Thanks for the replies! I know some of the items are Conrad Johnson, Audio Reseach, McIntosh...He's got all kinds of stuff. Not sure how "high-end" that is, I'm no audiophile.

Oooh boy, 3 of my favorite tube amp makers. If you post up a list of his gear, model, age, condition, pics, etc. I bet he could get some stuff sold here with no fees.

Just a thought.

Love Buck's. I got the TK-421 modifications to my system done there. It really brings out the bass.

All will sell quickly on audiogon.com. I've been a member there for 10+ years. It's the pace line of audio geeks. Interesting that so many people here share that hobby.

Audiocircle (http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=circles) is another venue for selling equipment via the Trading Post forum, although they generally nickel and dime you to death on price. Audio Asylum (http://www.audioasylumtrader.com/ca/index.html) also has a classified section, and they have an antique following so this might be a better outlet for the older stuff.

Audiogon is probably the main site though for moving equipment. It generally works well.
