I tried the Assos cream on my Assos shorts for the first time today. I didn't get irritatated, but the "menthol" effect was a bit uncomfortable.

I'm a "born again" rider (back into it after 12 years) and only doing 20 miles 4 times a week for the last 4 weeks.

I know my back end isn't toughened yet, but is the sensation I felt the norm for this product?

Can females use it safely? My wife will begin riding with me and I don't want her to use the product if it's not safe for her.

Yes, the feeling is normal and yes, my wife uses it on occasion.

Good luck!

Keep on riding,

Steve

The "menthol" effect is normal, though obviously worse if you've abraded the skin riding. It goes away in a few minutes and is definitely not there every time.

Something you can do to reduce it (and save money) is use Assos on the critical parts of the chamois and something else on your skin (some moisturizer than does not soak in easily). The Assos will be the better product, but by the time the other moisturizer wears off you won't feel any menthol effect.

I use something in a cow-spotted jar from Trader Joe's.

No idea on women using Assos.

I've only used one jar of the Assos creme due to its price, but it sure had a different feel due to the menthol. To be honest, I didn't think it was all that much greater of a product than other chamois cremes that I have tried.

My wife was NOT fond of the Assos creme, as she was quite unprepared for the menthol. I don't imagine that it would be unsafe for any reason.

A-hem.
I finally broke down and bought some of the Assos cream this year and I have to say that for me, it works really well. Yeah, the cold sensation of the menthol takes some getting used to, but it's no worse than the sensation you get from bag balm and the Assos stuff works better/lasts longer...for me...
Your wife might not like the menthol. I just keep reminding myself of the lack of scuffage and that it washes off.

A-hem. I like that.

Assos chamois cream got reformulated a few years ago. It used to be very neutral, but it needed to meet some safety standards (the old stuff would grow mold -- and probably worse -- over a hot summer in your bag). Plus, it kills more stuff on your skin and the menthol reduces blocked and infected follicles. I may use something like Chamois Butt'r in the winter but in hot weather, the new Assos formulation does a better job of avoiding any infections and lesions.

I coach a number of women who have mixed results with the stuff. If you have healthy ... a-hem ... membranes you won't have a problem with it. If you are suffering any kind of skin infection ... a-hem ... down there, or have any chafing or lesions, it'll hurt more at first. It's actually better for such situations and the cream does kill any pain somewhat after a couple minutes. Like most things, what's good for you isn't nearly as much fun. A-hem.

Has anyone noticed the similarity between Assos cream and Viagra?

Just a tip. Apply the cream on yourself, not on the shorts.

i also use "utterly smooth". trader joe's has it, as does CVS. it works great for me, and it much cheaper than assos. i wasn't aware of the medicinal qualities of assos. interesting, as always 11.4.

If you do a search on the forum for "kitty cream" or some such you'll find Too Tall's homemade chamois cream. Interesting formulation that I haven't tried yet.

The "A-hem" was due to the direction that the thread was taking...I'm glad you all get added benefits from Assos...And I'm glad you're all so willing to share them with the class!

The new Assos cream definitely has somewhat of a cooling sensation...if this is objectionable, I might suggest that it be mixed with the new K-Y Warming Cream...I have seen the commercials on television. An added benefit of doing this would be that you would be using a purpose-designed product for mixing business with pleasure...if that is your thing...and some of the earlier posts would indicate that to be the case....

Kitty Creme

4 parts bag balm
2 parts monostat, a yeast infection cream
1 part hydrocortisone cream lists 1% cortisone

Mix well and stuff it back into the bag balm container and apply some kitty stickers ;) I really can not remember who gave me the mix...probably Seana Hogan.

Hello Kitty Creme

Add 1 gram menthol crystals.

I hate to get even remotely serious again, but...

The menthol is normal, some like it - some don't. I do, but not to the extent of some of the other pervs around here. I don't find the Assos cream great for riding, it doesn't really last well enough for long rides. I use Bag Balm for riding and then, if I'm on a tour or have been riding a LOT and my butt's sore, I'll put the Assos cream on at night while I sleep and I tend to wake up feeling, uhhh, refreshed. I think its great stuff but not for riding, which is ok because it's too friggin' expensive for daily use.
