View Full Version : compatibility of 10 vs 11 speed chainring
Hello everyone!
I am getting parts to upgrade my drive chain, and was on the market for a compact crankset. nashbar so happen to have a big sale on some 11-speed crankset, and i was wondering if I could use that. The rest of the gears would be for a 2x10.
Actually, there is a SRAM Force 22 crankset for $130, but it says compatible with yaw derailure only. would this not work with the regular (non yaw) derailleur (I was given an old RD-7700).
much thanks in advance!

Any 11s crank will work fine with an otherwise 10s drivetrain. I'd recommend the non sram crank, it would work w/o a 'yaw' fder but there are better BBs and chainrings out there. What's the crank type from Nashbar?

Thanks for the info!
Mostly because of price, I was looking at this Force 22 w/ BB30.

I thought BB30 was a good bottom bracket, no? Admittedly the Press Fit BB will not work for my bike...
Thanks again!

What type of bottom bracket does your frame have?

I think it is a Shimano BB-5500 with English thread (68mm).
Right now I have a 3x9 drivetrain on it, but I was hoping to get the parts to upgrade it to a 2x10, without breaking the piggy bank :)

if its a threaded BB you cannot install a BB30 bracket or PF30 bracket, you need to find a english threaded bb and a crankset that is compatible with that.

This is not quite correct. The Force22 crankset will work with his threaded frame if he gets a Rotor BSA30 BB. http://www.rotorbikeusa.com/products/bsa_bottom_bracket.html
Kind of expensive, though...

I am sure there are other adapters as well to make this work. Think there is a bsa adapter for hollowgrams too but that is just silly.

I have a hollowgram if he is interested. :bike:

There's no practical way to use Hollowgrams with a BSA BB shell due to the short spindle length.
The Force22 BB30 spindle is wider, like the Rotor 3D+, so there is no issue with spindle length.

rival 22 front derailleur as well
anyone try this
good info on all the possible options and pitfalls, thx folks!
Another friend found this interesting articles on yaw vs non-yaw compatibility:
http://velonews.competitor.com/2012/03/news/it-works-we-test-sram-red-backwards-compatibility_209270
it doesn't cover 10 vs 11 speed drivetrain, but I don't think 11 sp shifter would work with 10 speed casette, cuz the 11 speed is wider than the 10 speed. hopefully some gurus in the list can confirm this.
