Peugeot made the best example of the mixte in the 1970s and they were crap back then too. A go-to-the-shops bike with disk brakes? Get real.

Key Feature: Sleek styling looks good on you

Its not a bike, it's a fashion accessory! I sure hope they make a water bottle that matches.

Well, only if you're adopting a highly technical definition of the term "mixte," limiting it to the twin external lateral design. Rene Herse and Jack Taylor made ladies' frames with single internal laterals and additional chain stays that were better reinforced designs than today's ubiquitous "sloper".

That Trek is fine. I agree that the disc's are a bit overkill but the people who buy them won't care about that.

Well, compared to a really similar Shinola, it's pretty good and 1/3 the price. Discs are selling points, afterall.

whyre the evil? because theyre big?

personally, i think it looks great. the discs make the lines really clean and uncluttered.

just making a reference to the thread about Trek going to direct sale approach. Trek is big and fine as far as I'm concerned.

I think that the use of disc brakes cleans up the rear brake cable routing that's sometimes quite circuitous on a lot of mixte/step-through frames. But, agree that it's overkill in terms of stopping power.

The best Mixtes came out of Japan in the '80s. Tange Cro-mo with decent components. My wife's Terranaut (re-badged Fuji)

Except that it screws up the dual diagonal down tubes. Traditionally, the dual diagonal tubes take a straight line from the rear dropouts to the top of the head tube, creating a structural truss. Since the rear caliper is in the way, they added that goofy bend in the diagonal tubes, and joined them to the middle of the seat stays (the thinnest and weakest tubes in a frame).

I have a weakness for such bikes.

I had Sycip build one for my wife for her 40th. Disc brakes, Alfine, and King stuff. Four years and 50km later, I realize that the idea was my dream versus her dream, as she prefers to ride her 18 yr old Fisher Klunker.

Ooops, my mistake!

You're hardly the first to have made that particular mistake.

I am close to convincing her to sell it and we just get what we can out of it. It is gorgeous and she loves the object, but not the reality of riding it. She says the steering is too fast
