View Full Version : Tubular valve stuck from Stan's - any ideas?

I use Stan's in all my tubulars and haven't had any issues with it, but I went to air up a wheel today and the valve was gummed up. Seems like it's sitting at around 60psi, so I needed put a bit more air in. Easy fix I thought, I'll just pull the valve core, clean it up and that would be it.....except when I pulled the valve core, nothing happened. No air rushed out, tire didn't go flat, nada.
Tried to poke a hole through it with a long nail (these are are Campy Boras, so the tire is a long way from the top of the valve extender), but that didn't work. Tapped on the nail gently with a hammer to try and poke a hole....tried different nails and sharp implements to no avail.
I could always just rip the tire off and glue a new one, but it's got a lot of life left and hate to trash it.
Any ideas or tricks to free it up?

try a small drill bit, turn it by hand.

The valve extender usually has a very small hole since is screws into the tire's. I'm guessing your nail was to thick in diameter to clear. You need a small paper clip to really get through that narrow portion. If you have a spare extender see if you have something thin enough to go all the way through it.

Sharpened spoke? carefully?

So I read somewhere to put the pump on the valve, put a few strokes into it to get 100+ psi in the hose and leave it overnight.
Came out this morning and the tire was flat so it worked. It's still not completely cleared as I can barely get air into it, but it's a start.
Didn't know the hole in the extender was so small....will try the paperclip route to clear it.
Btw: cross post to "why do you post here": this thread is exactly why. I know I can get advice on technical issues in a matter of hours. Such a great community, even if the non-cycling rhetoric gets a bit much on occasion.

If you have a ball of stan gunk right at the valve area, hope you find a way to take it out because I had a tubbie i had to trash due to the same problem and I would like to know a good solution for that problem. My tubbie at least was able to get some air out (barely) but yours look like sealed.
In my case had to trash the tubular... always you can change the inner tube, it is posible to do it but you need to know what are you doing tho.
BTW, now you know why I avoid those preventive maintenance liquid for tubulars.

I have the same situation. Very few miles, so I haven't trashed it yet but it's not usable because of the big glob of sealant that's hardened at the valve stem. Tried paper clip/etc and nothing helped....

What sucks the most (in my case) was that when i was riding a chirp sound was coming outta the rear wheel... then started feeling like a thumb (sp) like thing going on too... got home, a big ass ball of the liquid was solidified under the valve... :/
I was using tufo sealant. No idea if it was the type of tubular inner tube or what the cause of the problem... :/

Use Orange Seal..doesn't glump up as much. Stay away from anything tufo or stans, IMHO.
