Scapin have been back for a bit in the US and finally under a good distributor... The guys at Stage Race Distribution have had them and now have rolled it up under ScapinUSA.com...

The lead times are good and the prices are competitive. Two things that don't always go together for custom Italian (or Italian anything really).

Anyhow, it's here:

It's turned pretty dang nice... Scapin haven't always had great support here, but the guys that have the brand have done a really good job. A couple of friends have these now and everyone loves em so far.

I hate you. :D

You turned me on to Sarto a year or two ago, I think I love this Scapin even more...

Nice. It's nice to see quite a few of the established Italian makers turn their custom fitting skill to tube to tube carbon fabrication.

A bit OT here, but Charles, would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Zipp 202s. Especially compared to, say, Dura Ace 9000 c24 alloy wheels.

And just curious - you've done quite a few great reviews of pretty custom bikes for Pez. The Marlboro bike comes to mind, plus a Serotta Nove and Meivici, and a Colnago side-to-side review. So,... what becomes of these bikes in the long run? Do you have a garage full, or do you end up selling them to make room for the next project? You're not my size, so no self-interest here!

Cheers.

I really like the 202's. The newest versions hubs are actually a bit easier to service and maintain than past hubs. It's an all new design versus the ones in this review (which are the last version). I really like the braking surface of this version shown as well as the updated version that has a bit or a molded cross/cut pattern. They're a bit harder on pads, but I think it's the best braking surface for carbon clinchers available... That said, metal brake tracks still have the advantage of good feel without the extra pad wear, but that's the trade off. Durability has been good for Zipp on the clinchers (and it's better for everyone else as well).

These bikes go different places depending on what it took to put them together... Some go back to manufacturers and some stay here (in the case I spent a lot of money putting it all together). I think that's why you don't see many projects like these... They are expensive even in the best conditions and when you go adding detailed paint and special parts costs, the wheels fall off the "manufacturer supplied" wagon. And it's not like Bike reviewing pays well enough to go do projects like this Scapin, or the next couple bikes... A Mercedes AMG Patronas Boardman Air 9.8 Super Record, Or a Parlee Z Zero-Disc Isle of Man / Dunlop Livery :).

I put a chunk of change into these and make em my own... It just happens that they get posted on line. But I would be building projects like this with or without Pez.

Great reviews Charles. I love how you pick out a less known brands and highlight them. The builds are fantastic too. Looking forward to the z-zero review.

Just shooting off the cuff here, but my initial thought was "I wouldn't be surprised if Sarto was contracted to make that".

Charles, do you know if Scapin makes their carbon frames in-house or do they contract out the fabrication?

Regardless, these are great looking frames!

Sarto don't make em.

They make a lot, but not these.

Scapin are art of the Olympia group which are a few brands banded together.

It's the bike that's getting the most miles now... 27 section Pave's pumped to 80psi... It's nice.
