I think others have said it, but I get a sense of gratification when I wear tires down to the cords. In contrast, I am merely annoyed when I wear out brake pads. I get a wistful, nostalgic sense when I wear out a saddle.

How do you relate to bike parts?

I find satisfaction from wearing out cassettes. I get 10 k or so out of them so its a milestone sort of........

The only bike part which gives me some satisfaction when wearing out would be a frame. I have managed to ride 2 frames until they failed. One was due to a defect. The other was due to taking a beating over 13 years, combined with galvanic corrosion.

Tires, pads and cassettes simply remind me of the expense involved with normal wear and tear.

Since switching to 10 speed I'm much less happy about replacing chains

Yeah. When something goes, it's kind of like, "Ah, crap, now i need to buy another _______________."

I have over 25K miles on my Record 10 kit-including cassette. Time to upgrade baby

My favorite saddle is 100% carbon composite. It does not wear out.
