I'm looking at a set of Dragon 3s on a nefarious auction site and I'm a bit worried about the damage to the carbon sole on this pic. Opinions?

Doesn't look like much of an issue to me, it rarely is. The uppers will pull apart before soles disintegrate, usually.

That said, a photo can be rubbish for showing real impact like depth of gouge etc.

I use these on my carbon soled mtb shoes. Seem to work pretty well with my eggbeaters.

yep.

mavic shoes even come with shield like these, or at least they used to.

that said, i have caught the edge of one of the shields on the pedal bars and folded it, making it impossible to clip in...so my new method is to just get new shoes before every season ;)
