Hey everyone,

I need some new base layers, but don't feel like shelling out $30 per piece. Anyone have a go-to cheap base layer? Bonus points if its sleeveless.

Has had a couple of different thicknesses of long sleeved, quarter zip poly plastic tops. They have a small collar, but no issues under my jerseys. Of course they stink after one ride, but I think they move moisture better than Samrtwool...for instance. Think the price was under $15.

Army/Navy store! Our local guy gets stuff online from all over the world. I'm sure I could do the same, but I wouldn't be able to try on the weird sizing. It's hit and miss, so I usually shop winter stuff in summer and summer stuff in winter. I'll buy lots of types of shirts and pants/shorts from the thrift store but never a base layer fit item...kinda like a chamois. New for me thanks!

+1 They're cut long which makes them perfect for cycling.

man, I saw the uniqlo ones a couple days ago (there is an actual brick and mortar uniqlo here), and saw online that they had the sleeveless version (which is exactly what I want), but right after I posted this thread I checked online and they're not there anymore.

I kinda feel like that's what I get for being dumb and waiting a couple of days to order :(

^^This. Merino or cashmere sweaters. Buy one size smaller than you wear. Wash. Cut the collar and sleeves off.

this. terramar polypro base-layers rock. i go with a light-weight smooth-weave in summer and a heavier waffle-texture in winter, can mix and layer depending on conditions. i buy 'em on the small side so they form-fit and dont have excess bulk and i trim the sleeves to whatever length works for my needs. i also trim the torsos, again to minimize excess bulk around my midsection when folder over on a bike.

check out campmor.com and sierratradingpost.com for good deals.

While you *can* wear cheap base layers, why would you when the good stuff works so much better?

Life is short...

I've got a coupla Garneau base layers, a few Castelli Seamless Sleeveless, a few Descente mesh base layers, etc Shop em on sale/closeout and you can get the good stuff for less.

The mesh stuff is probably the warmest thing you'll put on in the winter and helps keep you cool in the summer.

so much better?! i gather you buy into the marketing BS.

i'm a big believer in using good stuff where it matters. i spend excessive $$$ on vittoria corsas even though i live in an area with crappy roads. and i spend silly $$$ on top-shelf santini bibs. a nice ride is a nice ride. and a comfy ass is a comfy ass.

but we're talking base-layers. seriously...100% polypro is 100% polypro, just buy in whatever weight/weave suits the niche.

While I'm not paying top dollar for these baselayers, there is nothing wrong with the fit and since they are made with polypro, they keep me dry and warm on cool morning rides in foggy San Francisco. they feel soft and smooth on the skin...I'm not throwing a cheap rag on my back the collects sweat.
