OK, we've all been there. even if you dont admit it.

drunk ebay bidding. it's a real thing. one glass of scotch leads to another, the laptop is near by and, well....

anyway, a few days later, and these show up. i havent rolled a set of these hubs in a while, and am re-convinced, these are the best hubs ever produced. we should all mourn the fact that they are out of production. all hail the golden era, the pinnacle of componentry. that is all.

The newer, still sold black version is also very good but I do wish they still made it in silver. Hell, call them athena hubs campy and make more silver stuff.

I was always very partial to the old Mavic hubs. Ran so smooth...

Polished White Industries T11 hubs made me never look back. They roll just as smooth when broken in.

Even better I have these. Still rock the older skewers though.

I agree that aesthetically and functionally they are amazing but, even as a campy guy at heart, I would say the Dura Ace 7700 hubs are very elegant and just as functionally amazing as the Record hubs. And the silent free hub...so nice.

I agree, just scored a set on once built silver Record hubs. BUT the only thing black ones 'suffer' from is lack of drilling besides 32h and 'black', but the innards are the same and actually improved. A one piece freehub that doesn't split(altho you can put the newer FH and axle in these silver hubs).

The left side adjust plate is a great idea...adopted by many companies, not the least of which is CK.

Since were talking about hubs..these, altho nice, with the shimano specific, FH bolted onto the hub body(still a shimano exclusive), the FH body is 2 pawl only and not 'really' serviceable. It's really just a 2 pawl freewheel body, bolted onto the hub body. I think the 7800/7810 hubs were a huge mistake for a lot of reasons(FH not bolted on, shimano 10s only) but all was well with 7900 hubs(ti FH body) and now 9000 hubs(ti FH body/11s). BUT back to a rather simple, 2 pawl FH body, bolted onto the hub body. Not really that different than 7900 hubs, not sure why 9000 hubs are SO expensive.

My only gripe with those silver Record hubs is the black plastic dustcover. Fine until one cracks and near impossible to find a replacement.

Silver Campagnolo Record hubs. Yes, the best there ever was. As a Campagnolo-only cyclist, they were all I ever bought for years, barring a one-time dalliance with a pair of Tunes.

I can't say I would have bought more of them if I knew they were going to be discontinued as I already had what I could use. But having a dozen sets would have been just dandy for the profit motive.

I dunno.

Royce hubs on my bike are pretty damn amazing. Not even mad that they cannot be converted to 11spd.

I have a set of those laced to Campy Hardox rims that are a joy to ride. I have a Shimano free hub though... Sorry don't flame me for it :D

Problem is next year I plan on buying a new bike and I don't think I can put 11-speed on them :(

Campagnolo makes a 11s shimano freehub for these, plug and play.

I'd have to say my all time favorite hubs are Bullseye....nothing else I've ever owned seemed to roll as well as those.

I loved my old Suntour Superbes, but my locally produced Phil (Wood) Hubs were a sentimental favorite. Indestructible. Or, if you achieve the impossible (destruction), easily rebuildable

Campy hubs are great for the road but I'd choose Shimano m950 XTR hubs for cross or gravel grinding if you're able to run 135mm hubs and are happy with a 10 speed or less cassette. They aren't hard to find, easy to service, relatively inexpensive, and are almost impossible to kill.

I've recently fallen in love with Extralite hubs. I've always run Tune hubs on my bikes and they're super nice with the upgraded ceramic bearings.

That being said, nothing I've ridden has been as butter as a T11 set I used to own. After the break in, those hubs rolls forever and ever. Now if White industries could lighten them up a bit. haha

The White Industries hubs I have had are pretty amazing.

That said, the 1980s Mavic hubs were pretty much the gold standard. They seemed to have no resistance. I owned a set of Mavic cassette hubs in the late 90s/early 2000s and they were Shimano 10-speed compatible. I had a conversion cassette to work with my Campagnolo and it never shifted that smoothly but that's another story. The hubs were super smooth and I wish I hadn't sold them because they were rare and very, very nice.

But today I'm pretty much in love with the White Industries and I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on some T11s. I have WI on my Indy Fab Gravel bike and they're great and I have them on my Hampsten single speed.

I'm sitting on two sets of the Campagnolo Record hubs in silver in the rare (and pretty much perfect) drilling of 32/28. They're not for sale but they're not getting used either. I bought them new about 13 years ago. They each have thousands of miles. I've considered building them up with some Pacenti SL23 rims. We'll see.

Your post gives me warm and fuzzy feeling about those wheels that I just bought, which I should have next week.

Side question since we are talking about hubs, does the Mavic Ksyrium free hub (Shimano or Campagnolo) requires any adapter or spacer to support 11 speed?

Campy record hubs from the 80's. Nothing new comes close in terms of roll out or maintainence requirements.

It's absurd how much better they are than anything produced today.

No, either 11s cogset just goes on w/o the included spacer(which is for shimano and 10s).

The French randonneur bike that I bought some years ago came with MaxiCar hubs. At that point they were about 35 years old and were smoother and spun more freely than anything that I have ever seen. unfortunately, MaxiCar quit making bike hubs before the cassette era, so their applicability is really limited. Other than that, the oversize axle Campy hubs are as close to perfect as one could expect, especially the older silver ones which came with the best skewers that have ever been produced....nearly the same can be said about the recent Dura Ace hubs. Even at a greater cost, every brand of "boutique" hubs has some shortcoming compared to Shimano or Campagnolo....excepting PMP which come pretty close to perfection.

+1 for Dura Ace 7700s: silent, smooth, and the worst I can say about them is that they aren't designed for touring loads.

I've got two bikes with White hubs and am not clear why there is so much love for them out there. Finish is pretty/classic and the eccentric fixed hub (ENO) is a cool solution (though it slips if you are, say, hopping over a potholes and expansion joints in Boston), but the bearing adjustment seems sub-optimal when you actually need to use it (poking tiny hex wrenches through tiny openings after accruing a few thousand miles of grit). Assuming you have the right tools, lock/jam nuts and the Phil Wood solution work well in all conditions

My $0.02 is probably worth less than you paid for it

I can't speak for Campagnolo hubs other than the old track hubs which spin great. I am a fan of Shimano hubs. I have both the 7700 and 7900 hubs on two of my bikes and the ultegra counter parts on my wife's bike. I love how quiet they are and the low maintenance of them, plus they spin just as buttery as any quality hub I have ever touched. Additionally, they have great skewers and seem to be bullet proof.

It has been said that WI hubs are a bit on the heavier side. I've been told by a couple builders and it's mentioned in online reviews that this is because they use a steel axle for stiffness. Additionally, they use a Titanium freehub body, which is heavier, but more durable, than aluminum.

It's absurd how much better they are than anything produced today.

I recently pulled out an old set of mine and built up a new wheel set and was pretty pleased with myself.

Then I sorted through my old freewheels and purchased and tried a couple of others. I can't believe how crappy freewheels are/were. The wobble. The restricted serviceability. And I rode these things for about 25 years!

Any love for the Mavic 571s?

I have fond memories of the 500s. Back in the freewheel days, I could run these and avoid the Campagnolo broken axles. Easy rebuild too.
