So his heart rate on a climb destroying people has not exceeded 174 this tour? Armstrong regularly released training #s at 200 plus.???

HR varies from person to person. My heart rate never goes over 195 or so, but a teammate's will hit 205-210.

The VN article said his max HR is 174. He hit 158 on the hardest climb so far...

Greg seems to be able to look at this with some objectivity....

Heart rate alone means nothing. I went to a presentation by Joe Friel at a local bike shop when I lived in AZ. He had a 50 year old client who did triathlons and would run 1/4 miles at 210. He had another client who won an age group nationals and his heart rate never exceeded 130. He made every client he had fly to Scottsdale and be tested.

Then he could set proper training programs.

This was pre all the use of power meters.

Many years ago, when I was regularly racing on a local team, we had a group hill workout. At the time I was wearing a HRM, more for grins than any useful training data. Anyway, a team mate asked what my pulse was -- 160. His was approaching 195. We were side by side at the same speed, similar race results.
