View Full Version : Creaking spokes are bad, right?

Whenever I stand and pedal I get what sounds like creaking spokes from my rear wheel. The wheels are 32-hole (IIRC) Mavic CPX12s with Record hubs. I bought the bike used so they could be an older build.

I'm new to road bikes and I don't know too much about wheel building so I'm not sure how the spoke tension is but there aren't any obviously loose spokes. I wanted to make sure some creaking isn't normal before I took them to the LBS for a check up.

Thanks.

Jason

eh. mine do that, but it's the result of dirt where the spokes cross. a shot of triflow before the ride will do it. so will cleaning it.

ya, a little light lube at the heads (at the hub) helps too.

the spokes could be loose....

Not to the point where you can feel them "loose". But, detensioned.

Happened on a rear wheel of mine. Made all kinds of creaking and clicking noises. What solved the problem was raising the tension AND shooting some Tri-Flow where the spokes cross.

Good luck!

Ditto,

look at the rim side wall coresponding below where the nipples are. Do you see hairline cracks? If not, try a dab.
