View Full Version : Cannondale Hollowgram SI Crank on BSA Frame

Hi all,

I've a set of Cannondale Hollowgram SI cranks (from a 2014 SupersixEVO) sitting around not doing me any good on the shelf. I also have a 2014 Raleigh Rush Hour, that's begging for some upgrades.

The Rush Hour is a bsa threaded bottom bracket, 68mm shell width. The spindle on the hollowgrams is, according to C-dale, 109mm wide (I measured to 109.03, so we'll assume they're correct).

Rotor has their BSA30 bottom bracket, which is designed to make their 3d+ cranks work on a BSA frame.

Simply using the Cdale crank and the RotorBSA30 wouldn't work, as the width of the now outboard bearings would be too wide for the cranks to attach.

It looks like this should be something that should be possible, either through obtaining a longer spindle, or deleting of some of the spacers normally used.

I've found a few threads (http://forums.mtbr.com/drivetrain-shifters-derailleurs-cranks/bb30-crank-non-bb30-bike-594100.html) of people wanting to do similar things, but they either went nowhere, or I'm too dumb to understand what they did (absolutely a possibility).

There seems to be a kit (http://www.cannondale-parts.de/epages/61764971.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61764971/Products/%22KP094/%22) out there somewhere. Anyone

Has anyone here done something similar? If so, what were the results.

Or am I totally crazy and this is absolutely impossible?

Only possible if you're tolerant of a very wide Q factor.

Sure, let's say I am. Procuring a longer spindle the only solution?

Even though it's not technically impossible, for all intents and purposes it's impossible. Your best bet is to sell the Hollowgrams or trade for something that will work native on your Rush Hour. Sorry, dude. Hollowgrams are sweet (and if you sell yours I'd maybe be interested), but they will really only work on BB30 frames. The real question in all this is why aren't you running the world's best cranks on your Supersix? What did you replace them with?

"not technically impossible" is kind of where we'd landed on this.

The Supersix frame has a bit of a more ridiculous "not technically impossible" type project (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=170583) going on with it. I needed a set of 130bcd cranks for the project, so I've got an old set of 6600ultegra cranks that will be on there for the time being.

Ha. I'd seen that thread, so I should have put 2+2 together. It would be sick to have a Hollowgram turning a belt drive...

Does anyone know if the spindle interface is the same on the current hollowgrams between mountain and road? What about getting a mountain spindle and using spacers to take up any remaining space?

Mountain spindles are 137mm according to Cdale. 2cm is fairly huge change there, but could probably get a chunk of that back by moving cleats.

Also needed something with 24mm spindle for that, due to using an eccentric bb as chain tensioner.

This should work http://www.cannondale-parts.de/epages/61764971.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61764971/Products/%22KP094/%22

That said it is a MTB spindle but the interface for all Hollowgram cranks are the same. If you are concerned with Q factor you could use this kit and buy an older shorter spindle, available in 120, 122, 128, 132, and machine the shoulder away and space it out just like the new design.

Also, I'm using a Hollowgram with a belt. It took 3 orders from Dr Cannondale to get it set up right... Really cool though.

The standard Road spindle is 104mm, and these cups add 20mm- http://www.bdopcycling.com/Bottom%20Brackets-ADAPTOR%20BSA%20to%20BB386.asp

So a 128mm some extra spacers should work? 124mm might since you won't need the bearing shields...

Late reply on this....

You will be able to mount the Hollowgram arms to that frame with a longer spindle and appropriate bearings but the two problems... a) Q-factor (already mentioned)... b) chainline would be way off at 57-60mm (which might be doable on a singlespeed with cassette hub).
