Considering converting our Cannondale road tandem to 650b. Does anyone know of a 650b (584) rim with 40 holes? Velocity offers the Cliffhanger (http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/cliffhanger-584) rim. However, at 25mm internal width, this rim is damn wide. Any other ideas?

Hmmm . . . I thought the Dyad was available in 40h, but perhaps no longer.

With limited demand, it is possible that Velocity run small batches of special drillings for certain customers. It may be worth checking with Rich Lesnik (Hands on Wheels) or Stephen Bilenky.

Who else builds 650b tandems with rim brakes? Steve Rex?

My tandem came with vintage Super Champion rims, and a very small stash of spares, but some day I will also be in the market for 650b tandem rims in 40h.

I have 40H Dyads, but they are 700c. Don't know if they made them 650b.

We are on our second 650B tandem. The current one has 36h rims (distance between spoke holes is within a mm of a 40h 700C rim), but the first had 40h so we could recycle existing hubs. I found a 650B 40h Synergy at Longleaf cycles (in NH), though it did not last long. 650B 40h Synergy on converted Co-Motion tandem:

Rigida Sphinx has been the best 650B rim we have had so far on tandem, and it is in the catalog as available in 40h. xxcycle (http://www.xxcycle.com/rim-rigida-sphinx-650b-silver-confreriale-40-t,,en.php) used to have it (and Velo Orange used to sell Rigida rims), so it might be obtainable if your Google skills are up to the challenge :)

Good luck!

Rigida would have been way down on my list of possible makers. Thanks for the information.

Talk to Rich Lesnik, he's awesome to work with, and he knows the heavy duty rim brake market well. Good luck with the conversion!

A google search only turns up XXCycle as a source for the Rigida Sphinx 650B 40 hole rim, but the page says it's a discontinued item for them. So, knowing this rim was made for the Confrerie des 650, I checked their web site and learned that Rigida had to quit making the Sphinx, and now the rim is made by Ambrosio, in 36 hole drilling.

However, their site (according to google translate, anyway) says the following: "If the rims 36 holes you seem insufficient, remember that CPA has always rims Rigida "Sphinx" in 40 holes that once radiated on a solid hub will give you an indestructible whole. Such mounting may suit a tandem, or a machine designed for remote and difficult journeys." -- http://www.confreriedes650.org/jantes.php

So I wrote Jan Heine and asked who is C.P.A.? His reply: "CPA is Centrale Pneumatique something or other. It's a wholesaler in France who distributes all the products the Confrerie instigates. Any bike shop can order from them."

Sounds like you need to continue your search in France, but it doesn't appear to be hopeless.

I'm the one who brought up rim brakes, but if the OP is doing a conversion, he's almost certainly using discs . . .

Yep. Disk brakes.
