Did you use the shift cable guides screwed to the head tube?
Seems like edges on those will wear and eventually cut through the outer housing thereby making the housing do the exploding/unraveling trick.
Wondering if a silicone cable saver doohicky might be better...

P.S. I am a proud owner of 585, and yes, I used the guide, but no, I don't see a problem there. :p

I have owned three 585s and am now working on Nr. 4. Never should have sold Nrs. 1 and 2.

I never had an issue with those cable guides but I also think they are unneeded. I instead with they had barrel adjusters up there like they did on the 381/481 series.

They are not an issue.

Ordered a set from a Look dealer not long ago. Not cheap at $4.99 each, but it looks right and that makes me happy. These would have to be an easy project for a 3D printer...

Sold and worked on a lot of 585s..I've seen the wee screw in guides break, but none have gooned up the der housing. IME.

I use them with no real cable issue, except one of the guides broke and I have to replace.

Sure do love my 585.
