Cycling in Manhattan?

There for a few days next week and looking to get some saddle time in while the family is shopping. The Manhattan Waterfront Greenway looks interesting (figure even I can't get lost). Anyone done that route? Any other recommendations?

Would also need a good bike rental place.

Greenway is nice for seeing the scenery but can get crowded. Early in the morning is best. Check out Toga for rentals.
