View Full Version : Anyone ever use a 12-30 on Ultegra 6700 drivetrain (with a 53/39 crank)?

Title says it all.

Aesthetics aside, does it work or does it suck, being such a wide gap in teeth like Michael Strahan....

Rear derail. is rated for it (16 tooth diff. max between cassette and chainring).

Just curious as to practical application. And no need to mention "get a compact" because I'm trying for the 30 rear in order to revert to the aesthetics of a certain 39/53 crank (in lieu of 34/50).

Just ask Justin tomorrow. If it works, he will know.

My SO has 12-30 / 50-34 on Ultegra 6700 short cage on her bike and it works fine. A bit of "B" screw adjustment and it is quiet and happy. No reason to think it wouldn't work with 53-39...

I've gone to 32t with success on two shimano bikes. B screw may need to be inverted or swapped to a longer one. Depends on your RD hanger placement with respect to your dropout. It's worth a shot if you have the cassette already.

That being said, the gaps suck a lot.

Not exactly the answer to your specific question but I use a 6700 short cage rear dérailleur with an 11/32 cogset along with a 34/50 compact crank very successfully on a variety of bikes, both custom and off-the-shelf bikes (6 different bikes) no no modifications other than a b-screw adjustment. I'm currently building a custom using a normal Paragon dérailleur hanger and fully expect to be able.to use my trusty 6700 der/cig combo as usual.

The 5700/6700/7900 rear dérailleurs will all easily run a 30t rear cog.

I have used a 53/39 with a 12-30 when in the mountains. Works fine. Need to be a little careful shifting from big ring to little as I have had it drop on me a few times due to extra slack match with a short cage RD.
I did not need to adjust the B tension screw...as mentioned this depends on your frame.

You should no issues.

1)-yes it does, with that rear der, as long as the chain is a proper length
2)-no such thing as a free lunch. add a 30t, lose an interior cog..
