We are working on California Street in San Francisco this week. Anyway, walking back to the hotel each night we see a huge hill on California Street. Walked up it tonight just to see what it was like. The hill was steep and you could see the Golden Gate Bridge from up there...it crossed Chinatown. Walking down the other side was concerning with leather heels and soles...had to take it slow. Believe the hill was part of the chase scene in the movie Bullitt.

If you can make it over to Jones Street it has two blocks of very steep hills that make California tame.

I think you were looking at the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge (not the Golden Gate). It's still a great sight though. :)
Welcome to SF.

We went to a pro race in San Francisco many years ago. It was a circuit race and we stood on one of those super steep hills. It was amazing to see the guys fly up that hill. Absolutely dumbfounding.

It was the "Tour of San Francisco". The worse was the Fillmore Street Hill, a deadly steep section. After many times around, many of the pros were gassed, and had to resort to zigzagging up. It was great fun to watch that race. Too bad it's not happening anymore. This is a shot I made from the 2003 race. Anyone recognize the riders? :)

The race was called the San Francisco Grand Prix. The initial editions had them up Fillmore 11 times, but that took so much toll on the riders the last edition cut it back to 9x.
The section of Fillmore in question has three distinct blocks/grades. the sidewalk is actually a set of steps. yes it is steep.
Watching pro riders paperboy was unreal.

That's me in the orange.
OK, not really. Love the city. Never rode the hills, but always drive up them in amazement.

I believe it was called the T-Mobile international at one point. One year they let people preride the course. You had to get up early but it was neat to race around SF on closed streets.

I think you are right since this cowbell I got was from an early addition. Later on it was iShares sponsoring
US Postal / Discovery was still the draw then One year -7 raced it.

Yeah, you are right. The cable car is awesome. Took the Powell-Hyde line down to the waterfront. The driver was constantly yelling at me for stepping over the line (hanging outside). The views were awesome. It was great.
So anyway,

I would ride up cal 3-5 times a day some days for work.
If I was feeling brave (ie. Dealing with the a hole drivers id take cal all the way up which is actually not that hard) otherwise grant->pine->Powell->cal. Easy
walk up, skid/slide down

Just imagine what it is like on a Daishell Hammett style damp foggy night in leather soled shoes--I once sort of skied down Nob Hill in such conditions. Also fallen on my ass.

Read the link it was good. It is hilly here but no where near 30 degrees. The steepest stretch I know is about 20.
