Allow me to show off my '86 Cannondale SR1000. I take a special kind of fun in getting these older bikes and putting them back in respectable condition. I got this 'Dale as a frame and built it up from there, including an NOS SR Prism fork. Very "period". :-) Laced up new rims, etc. Not museum quality, but I think it turned out well. Time for a proper test ride... :bike:

Pics aren't loading for me but excited to see the results. I've rescued a few old cannondales myself.

Never mind I see them now. Nice work!

Nice, report back. I am especially interested in the ride quality.

Post this up in the Production Bikes sub forum in the Image Gallery. Looks good. Is it a bone shaker?

I just took it for a short test ride, and I didn't find it objectionable at all. It wasn't the magic carpet of my steel Bradley, but it was a lot more comfortable than the Ti bike I sold *gasp*. But to be fair, I am a "high density" rider at 5'4" and ~170. 700x23 Kenda tires, I don't think I can blame them for too much cushion but they did okay.

And yes, young people, downtube shifters work just fine!

I did take the above pictures on its photogenic side. On the left side top tube there are some scratches in the paint, but not nearly enough to give up on the otherwise solid finish.

A touring bike yet! This is my first 'dale in the road version, but I've had a couple tourers and a couple MTBs. I would love to find an ST series touring bike again, but I rarely see them in my frame size, and more rarely at a very attractive price.

The last MTB I had, the M800 Red Shred, went to a friend of mine to loves it and swears he will never part with it.

I've still got my 1984, first year SR900. Cannondale came out with their touring bike a year before, but their racing frames didn't come out until 1984. I had been lusting after over sized aluminum since I had seen a Klein while living in the Marshall Islands, on Kwajalein Atoll. But, they were uber expensive. The SR900 had Super Record reduced, meaning most of the parts were a mix of Super Record and Nuovo Record. I put over 30,000 miles on that bike. It had a steel Tange fork that was recalled in early 1985 and replaced. I didn't know it was supposed to be a bone shaker until I started reading reviews. It didn't seem that way to me. It was one of the more stable bikes on descents and climbed very well, better than the rider. I take it out every year or so. The saddle to handlebar drop is more than my current bikes and I no longer ride down tube shifting, but I do enjoy the ride. I have toyed with installing a long stem to bring the bar up a bit, but have been too lazy to do so. The bike is currently in the attic, but I might bring it down for its periodic road ride soon.

It's fun playing with the bikes that I couldn't afford when they were new. :-)

Great job. I love to see vintage bikes on the road. I will be commuting on my Peugeot this week.

Here is one I put together for my wife a few years ago.

How I received it:

I always try to keep one late 87-88 SR and one '88 St in the stable. Great bikes, very stable, good climbers, solid on fast descents. Current examples:

This yellow ST is my travel bike; breaks down into five major pieces (two wheels, main frame, handlebar/stem/front brake/rear brake cable, and saddle/seatpost. Everything fits nicely into an EVOC soft bag, 10 minutes to break down and pack, 10 minutes to assemble and ride. Done about 1K miles on it so far this year including a handful of centuries and doubles.

My first race bike in the USA. Some fond memories & race wins. Upgraded the frame set 2 or so years later when the 2.8 came out then that frame got killed by a stupid motorist the following year.

Yes, the ride was harsh.

Love the simplicity of those paint jobs, I got my CAAD10 painted to reproduce that look. I wish more of their current bikes came that way.

Here's an '84 ST400 I refinished (and later sold) several years ago. The original blue metallic paint was trashed, so I opted for something akin to my Klein's Vibrant Flare.

Anyone interested in a vintage Cannondale?
I've still got a Cannondale of that vintage that used to be my wife's. (New bike, same lovely wife) Looks to be about the size of the blue one and the light purple one--maybe 49 cm or so?

It's purple with pretty decent paint, and a variety of period Shimano/SunTour components. I think it's got flat bars on it but the drop bars may be floating around. I'm in NJ FWIW, but I guess we could work out some inexpensive shipping.

I'd put this on the Classifieds but I'm still waiting for my 30-day probation to end.

SPP, you really should post the pic of you back in the day with that bike just after you bought it. Classic.

I will take rccadr's yellow one in this frame size for $200, Alex. And throw in the vowel "O".
