I picked up an old aluminum frame (an Abici Podium I believe, but its bare so not 100% sure) and am not sure what headset it takes. From all the example pictures I've seen I can't tell if its an internal or integrated. I measured the head tube and it looks to be non-tapered 49mm. Is there any definitive way for me to tell or am I just missing an easy indicator?

UPDATE: post #14

Is the 49mm taken on the inside diameter of the head tube, or the outside? Inside is what you need to measure, but pics would definitely help with this one.

Measure the internal diameter... you said 49 mm... that rules out integrated or semi-integrated ( like integrated but with cups).

If you measured right and is 49mm... then you have two options... semi-integrated with 49mm cups or a regular headset with 49 mm cups.

If you look inside the tube, you have nothing that is tappered right? is just straight like any old 1inch bicycle right?? thats the indication that you have to use cups.

Probably that bike uses a 49 mm inset kind'a headset (inset = chris king)... no idea how other manufacturers will call to theirs 49 mm ones.

Never seen integrated 49 mm bearings btw.

Hope this helps even better...

I'll try to snap a pic when I get home from work.

I'll go home and double check the measurements, but I'm sure its not tapered just straight through. There does look like there its a slight deviation inside the headtube but i'm not sure if its enough of one to be considered a shelf like an integrated headset would use. Hopefully the picture and a double check of measurements will clear this up. I'll get those both up tonight.

Soooo I was way off base. Not sure what numbers I was remembering, but 49 was not correct. I measured the inside of the headtube again and both ends come out to roughly 40.9-41 mm. Forgive me, I am not a clever man. Here are some pictures as well.

Looks like there's tons of info here:

(There's a summary table at the bottom)

Take it to your local shop. They will press a life long King beauty in there.

So this is an internal headset and I'm assuming you are referring to a Chris King Inset? Sorry just trying to clarify.

I'm pretty sure you need a Cane Creek standard integrated headset. The actual head tube inside diameter spec is 41.1-41.2 mm, but I suspect your measurement was a bit off.

Here is Cane Creek's head tube information:

http://www.canecreek.com/resources/products/headsets/technical-specifications/headset-identification-and-specification-guide.pdf

What you need is sometimes referred to as a 36* x 45* integrated. Lots of other manufacturers make Cane Creek spec headsets: VP, FSA, Tange, et al. You want to avoid anything listed as 45* x 45*, which is Campagnolo spec and about 1 mm larger in diameter. Sellers' integrated HS listings are often sketchy. Look for one that lists bearing diameter of 41 mm.

Mee too. Use lotsa grease in the headtube under the bearings.

Ya I re-checked again this morning and it looks like 41mm top and bottom Internal Diameter and then 45mm Outside Diameter. So I need a standard Integrated not an Internal headset?

Would this work for example?

Sooooooo bad news, ended up getting this headset and, pause for dramatic effect, it doesn't fit. It is ever so slightly too big. So suggestions?

it says 46 mm, not 41 mm...

Measure the ID, were the bearing sits... you said 41. You bought a 46 mm.

Top Cup O.D.: 46mm <-- must be 41mm
Bottom Cup O.D.: 46mm <-- 41 mm

What I would do is to go to the LBS and ask them for the box of headset parts because you need 2 bearings.. you might god lucky and the top and crownrace can be used with whatver you find in the LBS, they always have old bearings moving around.

Sorry that I didn't see the link you posted in time. As I mentioned, many sellers don't have a good understanding of what they are selling, and bikewagon is consistently one of the worst offenders. Their ebay listings often lack needed information. See above where I said 45 x 45 was Campagnolo spec. That part bikewagon has right but the 46mm is the OD of the head tube - not really pertinent to the headset dimensions at all, but the wrong headset for you in any case.

Again, my best guess is 36* x 45* and 41 mm OD bearings are what you want.

The one pictured looks right to me, but you would have to be sure that's what a particular seller is selling. Cane Creek Fortys come in lots of models and sizes and that stock photo may or may not represent what a given seller is listing.

I have this FSA in gold, blue, green, purple. PM me if you want to try one. OR:
