I am refreshing handlebars on various bikes sooooo thought I'd start a topic on bars, specs. and why what works. I know what I like but WHY do I like certain bars and not others. It's deeeeep man ;) What works for me is a med. reach and healthy drop. Kestrel EMS ( 84/150) and Zipp B2 AKA "Contour Bar" (84/152). I can live with Salsa Pro (70/140) but everytime I get back on a bike with the magic 84/150 specs. it feels great.

Go for it.

Cinelli 65 'criterium bend' bars. Best ever. Ever. Period.

then comes the Cinelli 66 deep drops.

Finally comes the Deda Round Deep Drops. Similar to the 66s, but a bit longer reach.

Perfect timing! I'm in the market for new bars, and I also like a deep drop and med reach. I prefer anatomic bends (huge hands) but I'm looking for a bar where the segment that turns forward from the tops is close to parallel with the very bottoms.

The reason for this is because I'd like as straight a run as possible from the bars onto the hoods, without having the ends of the bars point at my toes. So far the Deda 215 is the leading candidate, but I can't find one in person to hold, so I have to go by web pics and trust those camera angles.

I'm in heaven with the ITM carbon millenium bars...78/148

I think it's actually the exact same bar as the Oval R900 carbon,
which i'm ordering to compare.

I've tried the deda 215, liked the tops, hated the drops, and the
round version is too short forward reach. Likewise with the ITM
millenium "strada" shallow bar, not nearly enough forward reach.

Why do all the shallow drop bars have no reach? Sure, for
poeople who want to shorten up that works, but not everyone
who rides with a lot of drop, and would like a shallow bar wants
to shorten up...

In my next life, i'm starting a custom handlebar company.

Except for the "anatomical" part, it sounds to me as though you are describing the Nitto "noodle" model 177 handlebar. http://www.rivendellbicycles.com/webalog/handlebars_stems_tape/16111.html

Riv calls what you want a "flat ramp".

I'm very partial to my 90/145 cinelli solidas. The reach is right with my 130-140 stems, there is enough room in the drops, and there are a lot of good hand positions with the campy shifters.

Nitto M-184 STI's 10/145 With a flat ramp and enough room on both the flat drops and the front of the drop.

I love my 3TTT Forgies, so much that I bought a few sets on close-out for future use. I'm not sure what the drop or reach is - Since they've left the market, that kind of obscure information is almost impossible to find.

But the real draw is the way the drops slightly flare out - The slightly more open hand position works really well for me. I tried another bar that felt identical on the hoods, but was just plain wrong in the drops.

Are there other bars that have this design?

Cinelli 65 'criterium bend' bars. Best ever. Ever. Period.

Yup. I just don't get flat top bars, my wrists don't point that way, why would I want bars that force them to? The slope also means that my elbows are wider, even with a narrow bar (I run 65-40's) which at one time meant that I could fit through smaller holes in the sprint. Now it means that you can take a shorter line in getting around me... Speaking of sprinting, the point of crit bars is to keep your arms from hitting the top of the bar when you're in the drops and out of the saddle. Every time I teach someone how to sprint they complain that their wrist hurts from hitting the top of the bar.

So here's what I don't get. People are still looking for Cinelli 65's - and they don't fit any ahead style stem! 3ttt Gimondi bend was another popular crit bar, which they stopped making 15 years ago. Nobody makes a crit bar - why??? OK, the Modolo Curvisima is close, but a $300 carbon bar with a big sticker that says it should be replaced often???

All that said, any company that makes a product based on what I think should sell will be out of business in a week. The same thing goes for making shoes that fit my feet, or winter clothing that works...

I love the shape, drop, and reach of my Modolo Curvissimas.

They have similar geometry to the old 3TTT 199's, but with the flattened area to rest your hand on.

I just wish they made them in aluminum so they weren't so d++n expensive.

Which model is that? I note on their website that they make two reach/drop of their classic bar - 135/80 & 144/88mm. I can't find the 144/88 for sale anywhere. Even their US distributor only stocks the 135/80.

My new bars are Nitto model 115. 45cm wide, 140 deep (both c-to-c) and 100 reach. The ends point at my rear brake and the tops are flat. Nice shiny silver. I like 'em.

These bars overcome my chief gripe with anatomics: the lack of a sufficient flat end in the drops. With my TTT Forgies I felt like I was holding on with half a hand while riding in the drops, which kept me out of the drops.

Hey davids, this means I have a Forgie bar/stem (46/120) just hanging in the garage...

FSA energy T is 90/145

ITM "strada" bend is the shallow round version, 75/135
it's not the slightly bent version which is 88/154

"strada" bend can be found on the 31.8 millenium 4ever
and the 25.8 old school millenium.

Personally, the 75mm reach is too short, not enough room
behind the ergo lever, so i ride the regular ones.

The new 2007 "101" series ITM stuff seen in the tour is the
first carbon bar from ITM coming in a round bend.

I really went out on a limp and purchased the new FSA Carbon K Wing for my new Ottrott. It's quite a bit different than my traditional bars but has internal cabling and due to it's beauty is only wrapped up to the hoods.

I really like the look and it blends well with my TiCarbon look.

Not everyone, however, will venture nor pay the price... but what the heck!

I'm using the Kestrel EMS bars (84/150) on my CIII (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=19158) and like 'em a lot. Before that I was on the "old" Easton ec90 which I think --don't quote me on this-- is 95/145. It was an easy transition to the Kestrel with a 1 cm longer stem. The Kestrels are really solid, way stiffer than the old ec90's, which were notoriously flexy.

i love the drops, though. my forgies didn't have a long enough lower flat for my hand; these are very comfortable.
