I haven't yet made the leap to Shimano 11 speed, but will at some point. Is there a hub I can have a new set of wheels built with now that can handle 10s now but be switched to 11s when I finally catch up with modern times?;)

If there is such a hub(s), is one considered best for quality and smoothness of spin? TIA.

Everything that is 11 speed Shimano and the other "s" guys can run 11, 10, 09, 08 and maybe even 7 no problem.
You just need the correct spacers.

Exactly - if I remove the spacer from my Mavic hub, then it will run 11 speed.

All 11 speed hubs can run 10 speed with a 1.85mm spacer that usually comes with the hub. White Industries, Chris King, and Industry Nine all come with a 10 speed spacer.

With that 1.85mm spacer you use whatever you would normally use. That meas in addition to the 1mm spacer that comes with Shimano cassettes.

Once you go 11 you lose all the spacers and just install the 11 speed cassette.

Thank you all for the knowledge. Much appreciated.

as for quality and smooth spin,
I have two hubs in mind that have really "done it" for me.

the first is the DT240S (DT SWISS)

the second is the Chris King R45
