I am used to ones with cable adjuster on the derailleur but interested to know what is the most up to date to use compatibly with 34 tooth 10 cassette and 10 speed STI. Not Dynasys.

Find an old XTR or XT? No adjuster... http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Shimano-XT-RD-M771-SGS-Rear-Derailleur-Long-Cage-9-Speed-3x9-or-2x9-Deore-/321736884987

I installed a Shimano RD-M592 on my wife's bike, it will handle up to a 36t rear cog. Pretty cheap, has worked very well for thousands of miles, plays well with her 10-speed shifters. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHIMANO-DEORE-SHADOW-RD-M592-9-Speed-Rear-Derailleur-Mtb-Long-Alloy-NEW-/391153628218?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5b1292b43a

The only niggle I have with it is that the der has no adjuster on it.

no adjuster, but maybe lighter. Bought 2, no shipping charge.

That one will work great, and you're getting them at a good price. I have two of the M972 derailleurs which are the XTR version. The only difference is that the XTR has a carbon cage (insignificant weight diff). My bike (Spec Tarmac) has cable adjusters on the down tube which work great in making any fine adjustments - and it can be done while riding. An adjuster on the derailleur itself is not needed.

You can still find Deore that have the barrel adjuster but if you can only find the 'shadow' ones, there are plug in barrel adjusters to use with these..must be 9s tho..when using 10s shifters.

A lot of people put in line barrels on them. At first I thought it was annoying not to have the barrel adjuster but it has been fine using just the downtube adjuster.
