And you can't have a thread about Japanese Keirin racing without noting tomity's thread Velodrome in Japan (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=49737)

Dang, some of the photos are now missing in tomity's thread. That's the problem with linking photos, eventually the links are severed. Oh well, there are still good photos there.

Cigarettes down, pads on...Nelson Vales has some great insight on Keirin racing when he was doing it. He was a rock star in Japan..Being 'Nelson Vales' didn't hurt. Surprised to see a dent in one frame..usually if they crash 'em, they get a new one..

Tough sport, BIG business..riders 'can' make big Yen..most don't.

I thought the cigarettes gave it that true gamblers atmosphere. I too was surprised to see the dented frame, thanks for sharing.

Another good one is the Shane Perkins Documentary, an Aussie who was accepted to the Keirin School, pretty amazing stuff.

A few years (maybe a bit longer) ago I had the pleasure of riding Keirin in Japan for a couple of seasons. Here's a couple of pictures.

No point of view like a first person point of view-when did you do it? Around the Nelson Vales era?

Great video, 4300 velodromes and racing in the rain!!

I was a little after Nelly, more Marty Northstiens time. I was there in 91 & 92, the training on the all weather surface was very strange, in the way your behind a 125cc bike in the rain on a banked track. I remember we were at kyoto mukomachi training centre and were out first thing and swinging up the track and seeing a gheko frozen to the track

Funny--always wondered, Jai-Alai in Florida, why not Keirin in Vegas??

Nice! Cool stories too. One of our local riders was a Keirin racer, probably 1990 era too, who ended up in Switzerland. This guy could pull on the front till almost everyone shed off the back just thinking ···?
