i know this is a bit like asking 'what's the most comfortable saddle?' but help a brother out. in the past, i've had good luck with 27mm Vittoria Open Pave EVO CG III. but i'm wondering, is there anything out there that might handle our crappy roads with a bit more suppleness and comfort, while not being flat prone? the 28mm Schwalbe One is one option i'm considering. 27/28mm is as large as i can go and still fit my road bikes.

what say you? should i stick with the vittoria or try something new? merci in advance.

Rivendell RolyPolys--more durable, still ride great

Grand Bois.--less durable, ride great

Compass/Grand Bois. Wonderful tires. I put a couple thousand miles on a pair of their 32s on likely the same roads as you ride, with no more flats that usual. The extralight casing is fairly cut-prone when faced with rock salt and other winter road "features" but the standard casing did just fine.

I've had good luck with 32mm Gatorskins that run 28-29mm...all wet and rotten road riding conditions and they've preformed well and are pretty smooth. I have them mounted on Ambrosio Excellence rims laced to 32h Dura Ace 7700 hubs so that helps too.

Wow, i love my paves, much better than my 4000s that i swore by. At 70/80 the paves are heaven for me...float over all the crappy roads we have

Tried 700x27 Open Paves... nice but too fragile for the roads that I ride. I don't even think I have 500mi on them yet, and both tires have already had to be patched. Have 700x28 Schwalbe One Tubeless on a different wheelset (Pacent SL23 rims)... they measure closer to 700x30... ride quality is better and no flats yet. I hope I didn't just jinx myself!

I have always had good luck with Paves. They ride good and wear good.

I like Compass Chinook Pass (700Cx28) (http://www.compasscycle.com/tires_comp_700_28.html), which are a true 28 on Open Pros.

The 700Cx26s measure 28mm wide when mounted on Hed Belgium+ rims

Michelin Pro 4 Endurance 25s measure 27.5mm after a ride or two.

Schwalbe Ultremo ZX in 28 ride almost as nicely as Michelins.

I know Michelins have a reputation for cutting easily. That might be true, but I don't flat any more often when I ride Michelin tires, and that's riding in Tucson, with plenty of thorny debris in the roadway.

Another vote for Compass' tires. I commute on their 32mm and 38mm tires, and the ride is beyond plush.

I have enjoyed Rivendell Roly-Poly tires and Ruffy-Tuffys but The biggest Vittorias I have ridden were only 700x25 so I can't compare them for you.

I've enjoyed the Schwalbe Ultremos and Ones. I like slicks in 28s. Seem to be durable, though maybe a little less than the Conti 4 seasons they replaced. Roll very well and probably a little wider than 28 as they break in.

I think just about any tire in that 28mm category inflated to that 70-90lbs range is going to be pretty comfy.

I for one am very happy that things have gotten wider again. It makes riding better for me. I put on the 27mm Pave last weekend for a dirt road Fondo and they were great at 80/85. Today I did about 6 hours on pavement and I was very happy with the ride at 85-90. They may be fragile but it is in part the luck of the draw (debris).

I think you're riding the best you can get in 27/28 with the Paves. If Veloflex Corsa or Master made a 28 I'd go with that. I think they are a bit more tough than the Pave, but ride very nicely even in the 25s which measure narrower in width than most 25s.

I would say it's the Vittoria Corsa SC tires in 700x25. They measure out larger than that. I have a pair on a bike and they are the silkiest, smoothest, fastest tires I've ever used. Can't say anything about durability, but so far so good. Not a tire for dirt roads, but for smooth or crappy paved roads, these are amazing.

Really digging Clement Strada LGG 28mm 120tpi. Very supple, soak up the bumps on crappy roads and performed very well at Battenkill. I'll be riding them on my disc brake all-rounder on the CRW Spring Century on Sunday.

Running Vittoria Open CG 27's. Good thing about these, they can generally be found from a UK provider for bit cheaper than the other "boutique" brands.

Yes the Master is a smooth tire. Great for a 25.
