Catch it while you can. Certainly the most unnerving film I have seen in a long time. Very low budget but far scarey than movies from the big studios. This one really seems to understand the most terrifying things are those that may live inside each of us.

Ha!

I've been wanting to but could not pull the trigger.....

I got the feeling it would be like the Shinning or Jacobs Ladder: I watched in late teens, early 20's nothing...good movie

Again in my mid thirties...Scared out of my mind!

Yeah, just saw that, but still puzzled by the ending.

BTW, I found Babadook via http://instantwatcher.com/

They should have sold the story book on craigslist, "$50 obo".

May be a spoiler so don't read if you intend to watch the movie.

A tip was the news report on a TV running in the background about a woman who killed her kid and then committed suicide. The Babadook appears to be whatever causes some women to kill their children and often themselves. I suppose whatever madness causes this never really goes away, you just learn how to deal with it and keep your monsters at bay.

Absolutely. It's the grief and despair she holds within herself. Imagine the loss of her husband...a loss personified in her child and dancing about, taunting her, reminding her...EVERY SINGLE DAY. Add to that the very real difficulties the boy brings into her life, and the madness becomes an understandable thing. Hence, the ending...she learned to keep that monster at bay, but the grief and madness will never truly heal. She only learns to live with it.

It's a great life lesson for dealing with loss and trauma.

Remember when she mentions that she was a writer, and that she did a children's book? She wrote the book, and when she goes to the police station her hands are dirty because of the pastels she used to make the second version.

I didn't catch that initially, but it makes sense (IMO).

I missed that as well, just thought her hands were dirty from burning the book. Makes perfect sense though.

Another interesting note, don't read if you have not seen the movie.
