I'm experimenting with my cross bike, and so I'm looking for a nice 700 tire that comes in a 30, 32, or even a 35, but isn't at all knobby. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Panaracer Gravel. But seriously folks, what surfaces will you be riding?

For riding pavement. Thus: no knobs at all.

Unless I'm missing something, the Panaracer doesn't come in a 30, and the 32 is knobby. Alas.

they do make >28 versions of known road tires i.e. Gatorskins and Michelin Dynamic Sports in 32- and when you can find them, they're sometimes a pretty good deal!

If you want a magic-carpet ride (http://www.gravelbike.com/?p=4255), check out the line of Compass tires (made by Panaracer).

I have 700x35 near-slicks from Performance Bike on my Riv Allrounder. "ST CROSS" with Kevlar belt. They also come without the belt. I think I paid less than $20 when they were on sale. I had one puncture when a needle-sharp thorn went through the sidewall and created a very slow leak.
Hmmm, I just looked at the Performance web site and the Metro-K 700x35 looks like what I have and they are on sale for $14 +/-

Clement LAS 33s (measure closer to 36 mm on my wheels)
Ritchey Cross Max Pro 32s
Panaracer Pasela PT 32s

All of these are available with folding beads, weighing about 350 g., and roll nicely on pavement or dirt/gravel. Ritchey or Clements better if encountering any mud or loose dirt.

+1 for Panaracer Pasela PTs. My favorite bigger volume slick tire by far. Great price/weight/suppleness.

I just got a set of the Gravel Kings in 32 which I'm also super excited about - I like me some mild knobbies that don't suck on the road, but not what the OP's after.

Yup, ive been on the panaracer pasela PTs for city duty for a couple months now with no complaints. Ride great. Got a set of grifo open tubulars with a file tread down the center for when I get out of town this summer to more hard pack/dirt roads.

I hear the clement X'Plor USH do pretty well on the road with their raised center section, but still have good tread on the sides if you're doing some mixed use terrain.

How much do you want to spend ? Paselas are a fine tire, but not in the same league as Compass or Grand Bois tires. If $130 a pair is acceptable pick up some Compass Stampede Pass, as already rec'd, or some Grand Bois Cypres. Be fore-warned, you'll love them and will never want to go back to a lesser tire.

I did 30ish minor mixed pavement and gravel and dirt roads on 700x30 Grand Bois EL tires with latex tubes last weekend and will never go back. Best I've ever ridden.

Another vote for the Compass Stampede Pass 32 tires. Even in the regular (non EL) version they are wonderful...

Okay, you've all convinced me. I'm going to order a pair of the Compass Stampede Pass tires. Is there somewhere, other than directly from Compass, that you recommend buying from?

Harris Cyclery. I've also purchased from Longleaf, but they are out of stock.

Should have started this thread a week ago and gotten 20% off at Harris.

Such is life. Still, I appreciate all of the good advice.
