I really don't understand this set up:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lemond-Zurich-59cm-Excellent-Condition-almost-perfect-/171764012248?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27fdeed4d8#ht_592wt_900

It looks like it's being sold by a bike shop.

If they were smart, they would replace the seatpost/saddle and lose the fork steerer extension, make the bike look more normal and they might sell it..but even so, $1300 is too high.

Simple...

0 the dude had some money, not a 3 bucks frame.
1 the dude was giant.
2 his butt hurt as hell, maybe with hemorrhoids :p
3 his back hurt a lot... IMO was easier just use flat bars.
4 big chance the dude was old, liked to ride and did not know any better...

Add all of that, and you end up with the weirdest set up and fit ever. A lot of stuff like that in this area, insane...

The bike looks like it was 8 or 10 sizes to small. I would be scare to hit a bump on that one.

I can't believe they didn't note the steerer tube hasn't been cut and has "plenty of stack left."

It's a selling point

I'm guessing extreme back pain.
My relative has his hybrid set up with steerer tube extensions, flat bars and aerobars. Of course my initial reaction was "What the..." But he said it was comfy so chacun à son goût

I don't think it does tho..that's a bolt on steerer extender. scary.

Well, at least the former owner gave riding a shot. Seen lots of bikes stranger looking than that, but with some fairly fit riders. Looks aren't everything. Price is a tad optimistic for the bike, but it does look almost brand new and it is carbon...er uh steel, wait what is it? ;)

That's gross and I'm surprised Roaring Mouse Cycles is selling as is but must be a consignment and they don't want to accept responsibility if it didn't sell after proper rebuild. I past by them a lot on my rides, prime location.

So we can see what all the fuss is about.

I really hope this bike was bought from an individual and not from a shop. Surely no one in a bike shop would intentionally fit someone like this.

Nope, they have another one that looks the same:

Hard to imagine what Chris et al are thinking?! Good Luck!

I'm curious why everyone thinks this is so blatantly unsafe... I don't think it's a great idea but if this is what customers asked for then it's a choice of either keep a customer or alienate them. Sure you can explain why you don't recommend it, tactfully, but if the choice is to lose a customer or give them what they ask for I can understand why shops do it.
That said are there reports of these causing failures or bike manufactures that officially advise against them? I haven't seen anything, but I haven't been looking either.

I know I know, I think paired spoke wheels are a bad idea too, but if there aren't any cracks I don't see them as being unsafe.
