View Full Version : Warm weather race gloves? No padding, full finger, perhaps?

I'm looking for some recommendations for a light summer race glove. I like riding sans gloves, but I feel like I ought to be wearing gloves for racing, and now that it's getting warmer, I can't wear the thicker gloves I've been wearing.

I'm thinking something very thin, with little to no padding? Full finger would be cool, but I'm not necessarily opposed to fingerless. The Rapha gloves look pretty good, just curious if anyone else has a recommendation along these lines.

Thanks,

Ike

Ike, the full finger 661 Rajis are pretty thin, with minimal padding. I have used them for years in summer heat, never in race conditions, though.

Giro DND (http://www.giro.com/eu_en/products/men/gloves/dnd.html) is my favorite, I wear them all summer long.

I've got a couple of pairs of the Hirzl grippr gloves in both finger and fingerless. Good material, don't get stiff, minimal padding and they live up to their name: really superior grip.

One caution is that unless they've changed their sizing they run really small. I wear a size L in every glove I've ever tried but the L is way too tight with the Hirzl's and I wear an XL.

Giro LTZ. Not full-fingered, but very light, minimal padding, lasted thousands of miles for me including some CX racing.

I'm on the Giro bandwagon, too. I like minimal padding and riding without gloves. But, I run the Giro Zero II and they are great. No padding, leather palm, good feel, and mesh back. Hardly notice them at all. Plus, they look good.

Specialized had a race glove, full finger and no padding.

I'm usually a no glove guy unless it's cold, then defeet woollies and so forth.

These XC lites as they are called fit the bill so much for me at least that I sought a 2nd pair for when they finally wore out.

These Q36.5 summer gloves are very nice.

The PI Divide glove is my go-to currently. fits great, palm is ventilated and the back of the hand is a super light mesh.

Prior to that glove it was the PI Veer for me. I wear FF in various weights for all rides/ races all year long.

I've been wearing the original Mechanix gloves for years. I love them because they have no padding at all and vent well enough. Seamless palm means no high spots in contact with the bars.

I use long fingered gloves year round. It takes just one light tumble skinning your fingertips to show what a full finger glove can prevent.

I've used the Mechanix gloves to good effect. When I had my big crash in 2009 I had them on. Shredded them (including a couple finger tip areas), hand was fine.

Currently I use some Camelbak Vent gloves. I think the shop (LBS for the club) got them by accident/special and I snapped them up. Great in the rain, super comfy in the dry.

Using them in the rain (race got called due to massive downpour, we all sat up). Fizik whatever that rubbery tape is, the thin version I think, combo is great in the wet:

I've been using some Fox Digit's and like them well enough.

That said, you need these (http://www.handupgloves.com/).

Another option is Troy Lee Designs XC gloves. This pic shows padding but it's really just another layer of material.

I love these gloves.

bare hands ! !

i ride with Pearl Izumi thermal lite gloves.

they are nice. no padding, but have grippy sections on the palm area.

they also have a softer section above the thumb....for...wiping your glasses? i wipe my nose :) haha

I have a pair of the Rapha PT. I like them. They fit my hands well and are minimalistic, which is what I was going for as I typically have ridden without gloves. The "mesh" type material on the front of the glove is very thin. The first pair that was sent had a hole in this area before I was able to use them. No problem exhchanging for a replacement. They were a bit uncomfortable at first due to seam placement but after a few uses, I forget I even have them on.

+1 on mechanix gloves. I also love the neon wells lamont work gloves. Ten bucks, long lasting, do the job. Commute daily with them too.....

I love the Teo Sport summer gloves. I have Santini/Altura/PI ones too, and the Teo Sport ones are my favourites. Teo sport is a bit obscure, but they OEM for quite a few other firms too.

I hate wearing gloves but after seeing a crash happen on our ride last Saturday I'm tempted to start wearing them again as well. Has anyone found gloves that are really well ventilated in the palms?

short finger version as well. the vents in the knuckle area help (especially with the LF version)

I use full finger gloves year round. Dakine Exodus or Troy Lee Designs Air are the two go to gloves for no or almost no padding and breathable back of the palm. These aren't easy for me to find in the local stores tho. For a minimally padded full finger glove that I can find at the bike shop, one I like is the Fox Dirtpaw. Looks heavier on the back but is actually quite airy and ventilated.

I hesitate to even ask this question but I will ask and then take the beating: does anyone have any experience with the Rapha pro team gloves? They look like exactly what I'm looking for - well ventilated with little to no padding. I've never paid more than $30 for gloves and $75 seems insane but after ANOTHER crash on this morning's ride I'm now convinced I should be wearing something to protect my hands.

Never tried them but I think the question you need to ask yourself is "Are YOU epic enough for the Rapha pro team gloves?" If so, then price is of no consequence :)
